NIBONG TEBAL, July 14: A female police sergeant was caught red-handed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Jawi magistrate’s court for allegedly taking a bribe. In the 10am incident, the policewoman, 36, was said to have pocketed RM750 from a detainee booked for a drug-related offence with the intention of releasing him. Sources revealed that the policewoman was believed to have been the investigations officer in the case and had promised to release the suspect if paid a certain sum of money. Penang MACC director Datuk M. Samarajoo confirmed the arrest when contacted. “Acting on a tip-off, we carried out investigations before arresting the suspect at the court this morning, ” said Samarajoo. The case, he said, was being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. The case is almost reminiscent of that of another female policewoman, bearing the rank of Assistant Superintendent, who was last year charged with releasing a detainee at the Penang court complex. She claimed trial to two charges at the magistrate’s court in October last year, including one of intentionally allowing a detainee to escape custody. L. Chand Kumari, 56, was accused of letting K. Prabaharan, 45, who was an accused in a cheating case, escape at 1.50pm from the George Town court complex on Oct 9 and of lodging a false report on the matter at the Northeast police station later the same day. Chand Kumari, who had been in the police force for more than 20 years, was charged under Sections 225A (1) (a) and 182 of the Penal Code and faces a jail sentence of six months to three years, fine or both, upon conviction.
