When you call yourself a Muslim – Sharifah Zahra - The Malaysian Insider

Ramadan was always the same for me until I came here as a foreigner in New Zealand. It is true that when you are alone you will be able to figure out your own self. Observing other people’s behaviour makes you realise the importance of developing yourself each and every day.

Being a Muslim is what I was always proud of, but my perception changed after I read a book titled “Start-up Nation, The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle”. The book revealed the determination, spirit and authenticity of Israel in making its own economic success. The life force and purpose that Israel has is nothing compared to us, the contemporary Muslims today.

I am not here to provoke, but let’s take this as reality. The economic development that they have created is amazing. They were suppressed for so long, from the Holocaust to oil bans – up til today, we still disagree with most of what they did but they remain successful. There is a chapter in the book explaining seeding the culture of innovation.

At a very young age, they were encouraged to find ways to be better in life, and whoever succeed should come back and instil that spirit in future generations. Yozma, Kibbutz and other government polices made it clear that innovation is very important in development. Besides that, unity is also a key factor for a better nation. “The New Republic’s Leon Wieseltier wrote at the time that Operation Moses clarified “a classic meaning of Zionism: there must exist a state for which Jews need no visas.” – Start-up Nation, pg151.
