PETALING JAYA, Aug 16 — A Pakistani, identified as a key player of the gang that wiped out more than RM110,000 from the bank accounts of four MH370 victims, possibly led an extravagant life as he did not bother to chase for his salary when his employer could not pay him last year.

This has led police to believe that Ali Farran, who is on the run, and his two known accomplices, had been involved in similar thefts.

Ali, who is in 30s, worked as a mechanic in Kampung Pandan, Ampang, and police have established that it was his account that was used to hold RM35,000 from the total amount that was stolen.

His former colleagues and employers said he had no problems when they did not pay him for several months.

“He worked for us for a year but when we were unable to pay his salary for months, he continued working and told us money was not an issue for him,” said one of the mechanics who declined to be identified.

Police believe that the three are part of a gang that siphoned more than RM110,000 from the accounts of Malaysians Hue Pui Heng, 66, Tan Size Heng, 46, and China nationals Ju Kun, 32, and Tian Jun Wei, 29.

A bank officer and her husband have been identified as the ones who engineered the theft.

The manhunt led police to the rundown at Muda Motor Sdn Bhd workshop in Ampang where Ali used to work and has his work permit registered.

The employee, when met by Malay Mail, said they were shocked when police turned up at their workshop two days ago looking for Ali.

“We had no idea he was involved in such a heinous crime. We told police that he has been missing for over six months. They left after interviewing the staff here,” he said.

“They didn’t really mingle with the neighbours and kept to themselves. He usually came back late at night. I only spoke to him once and he said he had been in Malaysia for five years,” said a neighbour, Hamdan Harun, 53.

City commercial criminal investigation department chief ACP Izany Abdul Ghany said they were confident of making an arrest soon as they believe Ali is still in Malaysia.

“We have recorded the statements of six people including the bank manager. Investigations are still under way to find out the relationship between the detained bank officer and the Pakistani,” he said.

Hamdan says Ali moved out from his home in Kampung Pandan in June. The 33-year-old bank officer, who was arrested on Thursday, had been working in the bank for 10 years. She was picked up by the police from her house in Sarjana Ampang.
Her mechanic husband, also 33, was arrested at a workshop in Pandan Indah.

It was revealed that the suspects siphoned the money by first making online transfers from the accounts of Tan and the two China nationals into Hue’s account.

One of the accomplices then falsely applied for a replacement ATM card for Hue and went on a withdrawal spree.

Because of the RM5,000 withdrawal limit a day, it is believed the suspects took more than two weeks to make withdrawals of up to about RM75,000 from the ATMs.

The bank only found something was amiss when its manager conducted a monthly audit and found large sums missing from the victims’ frozen accounts.

It conducted internal investigations on July 18 before reporting the incident to the police on August 2.

MH17 crash: Being angry is not going to help, says Hisham - Nation | The Star Online

http://ift.tt/1oU5Egu

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians should remain calm in the wake of the crash of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein. "My step-grandmother was on that plane, do you think I am not angry too? Just being angry is not going to help," he told reporters after meeting with family members at the Marriott Hotel here, Saturday. He said his immediate priority was for the 30-member Special Malaysian Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) to be granted access to the crash site. "Right now, I am focusing on Malaysia's three demands, which are access to the site, the safety of the SMART team, and the assurance that the site is not tampered with until we have a chance to examine it. "We also depend on sustained pressure from the international community on this, and as you know, I have been on the phone with both the US and UK defence secretaries. If it's anything like the cooperation we received during MH370, then I am hopeful," he said. Hishammuddin was accompanying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who met with the next of kin for more than an hour behind closed doors. MH17 disappeared from radar screens in eastern Ukraine at around 1415 GMT on Thursday, hours after taking off from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport bound for Kuala Lumpur. The Boeing 777, with 283 passengers and 15 crewmembers onboard, is believed to have been shot down 50km from the Ukraine-Russia border.

Stop blaming Malaysia Airlines for downed MH17 - The Malaysian Insider

http://ift.tt/1oTHCSS

No words can take away the great pain that all of us feel for flight MH17. Nothing could have prepared us for what happened on July 17 as much as nothing had prepared us for flight MH370's mysterious disappearance on March 8. No country, no airline and no one deserves a single or double tragedy that has struck Malaysia Airlines, Malaysia and Malaysians. And those who died or vanished in either MH17 or MH370. It goes without saying then that we should not add words to deepen the pain in our hearts for these two tragedies. Malaysia Airlines – one of the world's safest carrier – lost 510 passengers, 27 crew member and two planes in the space of 131 days. But no, some people want to speculate and assign blame immediately to our flag carrier and linking what happened to its lacklustre financial performance. Would any airline try to save fuel and fly over a conflict area? Several journalists in international magazines and business websites are asking that question. Even the PAS Youth leader is asking why the Malaysia Airlines pilot took a risky route and that MH17 should have followed other commercial planes and flown around Ukraine. Here's the thing. The route was declared safe above 10,000 metres and MH17 was not operating in restricted airspace, according to a preliminary assessment from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The Flightglobal website said while eastern Ukraine has been the scene of armed conflict, including attacks on low-flying military transports, IATA stated that the airspace in which the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER was flying "was not subject to restrictions". Why this condescending attitude that it is Malaysia Airlines' fault? Would it be fine if the pro- Russian separatists' boast that it shot down an AN-26 transport plane was correct? Would it be different if another commercial jet crashed? “They were the wrong airline in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Vivian Lines, global vice- chairman and crisis-management expert at Hill+Knowlton Strategies in Singapore, told the Wall Street Journal. But is there ever a right airline, a right place and a right time? Any commercial jet that is brought down by a missile is wrong. It does not matter where. No one here wants to state the obvious. That the 298 people on board MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17 had nothing to do with the conflict raging 10,000m below them. Based on American intelligence that says a missile brought down MH17, it is logical to say that the person who ordered or who pulled the trigger to launch a missile had no business aiming it at any plane in the sky. They don't own the sky. The passengers and crew of MH17 were entitled to a safe flight over Europe or anywhere else in the world. Why blame Malaysia Airlines for using that route when others use it, too? This is the typical mindset of people who also blame skimpy clothed women for rape cases. The only cause of rape is the rapist, not the victim. So it is with MH17. Malaysia Airlines' business is to fly people to their destinations. It has suffered so much over the years, due to mismanagement and lopsided deals, but it has given its "MH stands for Malaysian Hospitality" experience to all and sundry. The flight and cabin crew have done exemplary work, so it is illogical that any of them would take such a risk if they were told of potential dangers flying over Ukraine. It speaks so much for Malaysia Airlines that MH17 was packed and some had to take another flight to Malaysia and thus saved from the tragedy. It also speaks much about those who question Malaysia Airlines or Malaysia, just because both performed badly in the MH370 disappearance. Both events are separate. We still do not know what happened to MH370 but we know what happened to MH17. But in both cases, let us not assign blame to the Malaysia Airlines flight crew without any evidence. The prime minister is right to say we are united by grief but you know what, we as a country should be united by purpose. The political bickering since election 2008 and election 2013 must be set aside and the government must run the country as much as some politicians should stop taking the opportunity to score cheap political points. Perhaps it is true that Malaysian politicians from all sides have a unique ability to put their foot in when opening their mouths. That could explain the PAS Youth leader's appalling and disgusting comments. We need to nurse Malaysia Airlines back to good health because it carries our flag colours and our name. We need to heal this sick divisiveness in Malaysia and come together to mourn the 298 souls on MH17 and 239 on MH370. Can we do that? Or are we way past caring and having any empathy? – July 19, 2014.

We don't need hashtags to pray - The Rakyat Post

WITH question marks still dangling over what actually happened to Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370, Malaysians are hit by yet another disaster that robbed 298 families off their loved ones.

Flight MH17 flying out of Amsterdam enroute to Kuala Lumpur was said to have been gunned down over Ukrainian airspace before crashing in the vicinity of troubled Donetsk.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said in a press conference, with various nationalities involved in this tragic incident, the one thing we all shared in common was that we were united in grief.

What does that mean to the average Malaysian who makes up the majority online population of the country with regards to social networks? Create hashtags of course.

We pray on Twitter. We criticise on Facebook. We find idiots who make insensitive comments. We take a screen grab. We share. We criticise them. Others join in. More idiots surface. We criticise those, too. In between, we pray. Still on Twitter and Facebook.

When news broke that the plane was believed to have been shot down, I was at home.
After a few minutes of scrolling through the news and chat conversation with colleagues, I was out of the door and pushing my car to its limits on the highway heading to the office.

After that, things went from zero to frantic in a matter of minutes. I was angry, upset and confused. As is usually the case for an avid social network user, I turned to Twitter and Facebook, but I could not vent the way I normally would.

I saw insensitive comments, I saw prayers, I saw support tweets, I saw critical ones. I wanted to say something, but the only thing that came to mind was, “Shut up, shut up all of you. Just shut up.”

MH17 made me realise one thing. That as an average person on social networks, I make no difference whatsoever with my Twitter, Facebook, Instagram accounts in the face of unspeakable tragedies.

I ask myself what is the point of praying on social networks. When God requires no medium.

Being a Muslim, I believe in Allah and that He hears me even when I don’t speak. Which means He hears me even when I don’t tweet.

I realise that the best thing Malaysians can do for Malaysia right now is to lay off social networks and pray in silence.

It sickens me to see insensitive people getting the limelight when people share their status updates, even if it is in the name of criticising or showing disapproval.

In light of this tragedy, what does it matter that we take insensitive pricks and drag them through the proverbial mud? Isn’t that what they crave for, attention? So why give them attention when the best remedy to these idiots is to ignore them altogether?

What happened to those on board MH17 is devastating. It is a tragedy which will haunt us for the rest of our lives.

Ask those who were around when tragedy struck MAS Flight 653 which was on its way to Kuala Lumpur from Penang but was diverted towards Singapore and crashed over Tanjung Kupang in Johor.

Have they forgotten the tragic day in 1977 where all 100 people on board perished, and the mystery of what happened remains unsolved to this day?

This, too, will continue to haunt us. So what will hashtags and criticism on social networks achieve?

The nation is grieving. It needs to heal. Nothing we can say on social networks will make the pain go away. Not for the family members of those on board, not even for us.

What is even more meaningful and powerful than status updates and meaningless hashtags is the prayer within our heart. God does not need hashtags.

Go silent for a week. Look around you and reconnect with reality. Leave the news reporting to the media and let politicians bicker all they want. We can be the bigger person in the face of unspeakable sorrow.

The wound on our beloved country cannot be healed if we continue to criticise it or criticize those who criticise it. Either way, we are only adding to the problem. Just like how sometimes we take time off from work and head for a holiday to clear our minds, do this for Malaysia.

Log off for a week, because we don’t need hashtags to pray.
