BUKIT MERTAJAM, July 10:
Going about in large groups, smartly attired in corporate wear and introducing themselves as civil servants from government agencies before robbing their victims — this is the latest tactic employed by a gang of six preying on elderly folk here. So far, two have fallen victim to the gang of robbers within a week.
State Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Kesah said police had narrowed down the gang’s movement to the Central Seberang Prai district. He said the gang was dangerous as its members were armed and moved about in large numbers.
“This is the first time in Penang that such a crime (snatch theft and robbery) is being carried out by a large group of suspects as they normally comprise three at the most,” he said. Mazlan was speaking to the press after visiting Salmah Saab, 72, who had fallen victim to the six robbers whom she claimed were smartly attired in office wear.
In the incident last week, Salmah was watering plants outside her home in Kampung Permatang Kebun Sireh when the gang struck. She said she did not suspect anything at first and was about to enter her home when one of the men on a motorcycle grabbed her from behind and cut off her gold bracelet and chain worth about RM13,000.
“No doubt I am still in shock over the incident, but I’m glad I was not physically hurt despite falling to the ground.
“I did not think something like this could happen to me in this village. At first, I thought one of them was my son as it was his usual time to return home and he usually comes home with his friends on a motorcycle,” she said.
N. Letchumy, 70, another victim who became the target of the same gang, suffered losses of about RM10,000 when her gold necklace and rings were snatched by a trio, including a woman, who impersonated as census officers in the 3pm incident on Tuesday A special task force has been set up to trace the gang and Mazlan appeals to those with information to assist in the police investigation.
