KUALA LUMPUR, April 17, 2015: A video depicting two men in a violent fight over what was said to be a minor road accident has surfaced on the net, drawing criticisms by viewers who were taken aback that members of the public chose to capture the moment instead of intervening. The two-minute video was uploaded to Facebook page “Siakap Keli” on April 14 and had garnered more than 284,000 views as of publication of this report. It started off with one man, appearing older than the other, apologising to the younger one for presumably hitting his car. The older man’s apology was ignored and as he continued talking, he was kicked just slightly below his stomach. He then ran off to a nearby roadwork site, picked up a wooden plank and started chasing the younger man, who was then also armed with a plank, around a car before hitting him. The younger man, dressed in a white T-shirt, retaliated and hit the older one on the head, causing the latter to fall forward and hit his head again, this time on the boot of a parked car before falling to the ground. He then got up, blood streaming down one side of his face, and staggered to his car, struggling to start the engine and put on his seat belt. The whole time, onlookers just stood at the side, narrating what was happening and focusing on videotaping the incident, but none tried to assist the hurt man or cool down the situation. A man, claiming to be a policeman, did intervene for a while, but nothing further was done. Comments flooded over the Facebook video, with many pointing out the apathy of the onlookers, with one Facebook user with the name of ‘Che Wan Ancient’ saying, “In the many (onlookers) why none tried to stop the uncles’ altercation? Fortunately the uncle hit with the wooden plank didn’t die.” Another netizen, Mohd Firdaus Appy, wrote, “That’s right, all were busy recording. Then upload. Our mentality is moving backwards.” Novi Atriyanti was in consensus as she said, “Fortunately there was a police. Pity the one hit, but why did the rest just watched?” Although the video did not say where the incident took place, news portal MYNEWSHUB reported that the video was taken in Petaling Jaya.
