PETALING JAYA, Aug 16 — A Pakistani, identified as a key player of the gang that wiped out more than RM110,000 from the bank accounts of four MH370 victims, possibly led an extravagant life as he did not bother to chase for his salary when his employer could not pay him last year.

This has led police to believe that Ali Farran, who is on the run, and his two known accomplices, had been involved in similar thefts.

Ali, who is in 30s, worked as a mechanic in Kampung Pandan, Ampang, and police have established that it was his account that was used to hold RM35,000 from the total amount that was stolen.

His former colleagues and employers said he had no problems when they did not pay him for several months.

“He worked for us for a year but when we were unable to pay his salary for months, he continued working and told us money was not an issue for him,” said one of the mechanics who declined to be identified.

Police believe that the three are part of a gang that siphoned more than RM110,000 from the accounts of Malaysians Hue Pui Heng, 66, Tan Size Heng, 46, and China nationals Ju Kun, 32, and Tian Jun Wei, 29.

A bank officer and her husband have been identified as the ones who engineered the theft.

The manhunt led police to the rundown at Muda Motor Sdn Bhd workshop in Ampang where Ali used to work and has his work permit registered.

The employee, when met by Malay Mail, said they were shocked when police turned up at their workshop two days ago looking for Ali.

“We had no idea he was involved in such a heinous crime. We told police that he has been missing for over six months. They left after interviewing the staff here,” he said.

“They didn’t really mingle with the neighbours and kept to themselves. He usually came back late at night. I only spoke to him once and he said he had been in Malaysia for five years,” said a neighbour, Hamdan Harun, 53.

City commercial criminal investigation department chief ACP Izany Abdul Ghany said they were confident of making an arrest soon as they believe Ali is still in Malaysia.

“We have recorded the statements of six people including the bank manager. Investigations are still under way to find out the relationship between the detained bank officer and the Pakistani,” he said.

Hamdan says Ali moved out from his home in Kampung Pandan in June. The 33-year-old bank officer, who was arrested on Thursday, had been working in the bank for 10 years. She was picked up by the police from her house in Sarjana Ampang.
Her mechanic husband, also 33, was arrested at a workshop in Pandan Indah.

It was revealed that the suspects siphoned the money by first making online transfers from the accounts of Tan and the two China nationals into Hue’s account.

One of the accomplices then falsely applied for a replacement ATM card for Hue and went on a withdrawal spree.

Because of the RM5,000 withdrawal limit a day, it is believed the suspects took more than two weeks to make withdrawals of up to about RM75,000 from the ATMs.

The bank only found something was amiss when its manager conducted a monthly audit and found large sums missing from the victims’ frozen accounts.

It conducted internal investigations on July 18 before reporting the incident to the police on August 2.

Dutch Grief Abounds, but Mourning Stays Local

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — The Dutch public television station NOS broadcast solemn images on Sunday of mourners gathering at half-empty churches and at the homes of families who died when the Malaysia Airlines jet on which they were traveling was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

From across this small country, people interviewed on television were trying to address their grief and growing anger over a tragedy that has propelled the ever compromise-seeking Dutch into the hard world of geopolitics and war.

Friends of Laurens van der Graaff met at Café de Zwart in Amsterdam on Sunday to share memories of him.Teacher and Restaurateurs Were Flight 17 VictimsJULY 20, 2014 Pro-Russian separatists standing guard Sunday at the crash site. Bodies of victims were in refrigerated cars of a train that, for the time being, was going nowhere.

Bodies From Malaysia Airlines Flight Are Stuck in Ukraine, Held Hostage Over Distrust

JULY 20, 2014 Secretary of State John Kerry stopped short of saying Russia provided the missile unit that downed a Malaysia Airlines jet.Kerry Says Russia Trained Separatists to Use Antiaircraft Missiles

JULY 20, 2014 As Anger Rises Over Crash, Malaysian Government Is Reluctant to Assign BlameJULY 20, 2014 But as the deaths of almost 200 of its citizens aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur have struck the Netherlands with deep sorrow, its leaders have made no effort to channel the country’s grief. No day of public mourning has been declared; nobody is wearing black, not even on television; flags flying at half-staff are rarely seen.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte has repeatedly expressed his anger and sadness over the event in which pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine most likely shot down the plane with an antiaircraft missile, and he has been working tirelessly in an international effort to retrieve the bodies. But he has not sat down with any of the relatives of the victims. The country’s new king, Willem-Alexander, who took the throne in 2013, has been noticeably silent.

Though under the Dutch Constitution the king is required to get the permission of the cabinet for important decisions, he has not addressed the nation in a televised speech, but did sign a book of condolences. On Monday he was scheduled to meet privately with relatives of victims. “None of our leaders are fostering any sense of public spirit,” said Bas Heijne, a columnist for the newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

“They come across as cold and insecure.” Other commentators were more forgiving, saying that the Dutch tend to save their emotions until the full scale of the problem is clear.

“Like during previous disasters our royal family will wait a couple of days before they act,” said Marc van der Linden, a journalist and expert on the royal family.

While they were waiting, people across the Netherlands partied and danced during scheduled music festivals and summer celebrations, as if nothing had happened in a combat zone almost 2,000 miles away. Here in Rotterdam, Europe’s biggest port, organizers said that around 10,000 people attended the Crazy Sexy Cool outdoor festival where electronic music fans paid the equivalent of $35 to dance to the beats of about 30 different acts.

Still, even some of the partygoers were surprised by the lack of empathy displayed at the festival. “I was expecting they would say something about what has happened,” said Elena Vasilikos, 20, referring to the crash, which killed all 298 people aboard.

“But there was nothing.” Other weekend festivals here and in many other cities in the Netherlands went on as planned. “We have not canceled any of the events, as there is no day of national mourning,” said Lennart de Jong, a spokesman for the Rotterdam mayor, Ahmad Aboutaleb.

“The organizers are wearing black ribbons, so we have adapted the event.” On social media, the preferred public platform for the Dutch to express their anger, often anonymously, reactions to the government’s lack of action have been livid. Many online commentators have been calling for Dutch troops to intervene to safeguard the bodies of their countrymen in the custody of rebels in Ukraine.

“Where is our minister of defense?” asked Casper van Nierop on his Facebook page. “Nearly 200 Dutch have been killed. Send in the paratroopers and commandos to secure the site. Why is nothing happening?” Another Facebook user, Willem Vissers, wrote on his page: “When is our government announcing an official national day of mourning? Nothing counts more than solidarity with the families of 193 innocent Dutch victims,” he wrote.

“I am outraged that ‘party life’ seems to continue as normal here in Holland.” On Sunday, Mr. Rutte said again that he has been talking by telephone with world leaders, including President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, who many people here see as the real culprit behind the attack.

During a news conference Mr. Rutte indicated that there would be no military intervention by the Netherlands, saying his primary focus was to bring the bodies home. In the country’s usually sleepy seat of government, The Hague, people were in shock, they said. On beaches, in restaurants and aboard public transportation the deaths of so many of their compatriots were widely being discussed by Dutch citizens.

Joppe Ingebord, 61, sitting down to a fish lunch at a restaurant at the city’s port, compared it to the attacks of Sept. 11. “It’s the same situation as when the planes went into the twin towers,” she said. “We are very upset that they took so much from the crash site,” she added, referring to the news that the rebels and others in Ukraine who control access to the crash site had sifted through the plane’s wreckage. Michael van’t Hoff, a chef and dietitian, said his government needed to apply more political pressure.

“I’m only thinking of the victims,” he said. “Everybody is thinking about this every day,” said Sanne Vermeij, 22, a surfing instructor, adding: “It hit so close to everybody’s home.” Standing on the Scheveningen boardwalk in The Hague, Ms. Vermeij explained how her friends’ Facebook feeds were full of stories about the crash victims.

“Everybody knows somebody who had a friend on that plane,” she said. In recent years there have been explosions of public emotion in the Netherlands:

In 2002, after the popular politician Pim Fortuyn was assassinated, angry mobs took to the streets.

In 2004, there was widespread anger at a gathering on the Dam Square in Amsterdam when the filmmaker Theo van Gogh was killed by a Muslim extremist.

When the popular Dutch folk singer Andre Hazes died the same year, thousands came together in mourning. “Right now people are sad — and angry too,” said Alexander Pechtold, leader of the liberal political party, D66, one of the largest opposition parties. “If no one channels the sincere frustrations, they could backfire and it can become uncontrollable.”

Don't spin MH17 tragedy for your own benefit, politicians told - The Rakyat Post

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21

The MCA political party is calling for the remains of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 victims to be returned to their families and for politicians not to spin the tragedy to benefit themselves. MCA vice-president and Social Development Committee chairman Senator Datin Paduka Senator Chew Mei Fun said she was disturbed and outraged upon reading news reports that the remains of the crash victims were tampered with and their personal belongings were stolen. She also referred to reports that the aircraft’s blackbox was taken and access to the crash site near Grabovo, in the Donetsk region was blocked by armed pro-Russian separatists. “No words can describe the disgust felt by team members of the Crisis Relief Squad of MCA upon reading that armed rebel forces had forcibly seized the remains of 196 from emergency workers, thereby preventing their release to the respective families; and that the said pro-Russian separatists are blocking rescue workers access to the crash site,” said Chew. She urged the parties detaining the bodies to observe international diplomacy, protocol, human rights and simple humanity by allowing and assisting international aid workers to conduct their investigations and further operations to search, recover equipment and identify the remains. “At the very least, they should empathise with the grief and loss of the next-of-kin. “Detaining the remains and the flight’s blackbox arey suspicious actions to take. “The culprits should be aware that this was a civilian passenger plane, no different from the other 14 international passenger airlines making up to 850 weekly two-way flights, when MH17 was shot down,” she said. She pointed out that neither Malaysia nor MAS were involved in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia and should not be dragged into its hostilities. “Like all peace-loving peoples, we urge for peace and an end to all violence which are disrupting and even taking the lives of the common folk in the region,” said Chew. Meanwhile, Wanita MCA National vice-chairman and Wanita MCA Selangor chairman Ong Chong Swen said that while prayers could be held for the dead, support and help should be offered to the living. “If it is indeed proven that Flight MH17 was shot down, we must severely condemn those responsible and call for swift action to be taken against them for their disregard of human lives! “In these trying times, we should abandoned our differences and unite together to seek justice for the innocent victims and their families by exerting international pressure on those guilty parties.” She continued that at this crucial moment, the eyes of the world were upon Malaysia and it must take steps to uphold justice for the victims. “Thus our government must act accordingly by condemning the recklessness and irresponsibility of the perpetrators. “However, it is also sad to note the actions of certain politicians who wish to use this tragedy to gain political benefit. Their actions are indeed truly another disaster for the nation.” Read more: http://ift.tt/1tsBRzF

MH17 crash: Being angry is not going to help, says Hisham - Nation | The Star Online

http://ift.tt/1oU5Egu

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians should remain calm in the wake of the crash of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein. "My step-grandmother was on that plane, do you think I am not angry too? Just being angry is not going to help," he told reporters after meeting with family members at the Marriott Hotel here, Saturday. He said his immediate priority was for the 30-member Special Malaysian Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) to be granted access to the crash site. "Right now, I am focusing on Malaysia's three demands, which are access to the site, the safety of the SMART team, and the assurance that the site is not tampered with until we have a chance to examine it. "We also depend on sustained pressure from the international community on this, and as you know, I have been on the phone with both the US and UK defence secretaries. If it's anything like the cooperation we received during MH370, then I am hopeful," he said. Hishammuddin was accompanying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who met with the next of kin for more than an hour behind closed doors. MH17 disappeared from radar screens in eastern Ukraine at around 1415 GMT on Thursday, hours after taking off from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport bound for Kuala Lumpur. The Boeing 777, with 283 passengers and 15 crewmembers onboard, is believed to have been shot down 50km from the Ukraine-Russia border.
