Here is a lesson from the World Cup: a coach resigns from his job when he takes responsibility for his team's poor performance or when he feels he does not have the ability to take the team further.
Perhaps Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) should take the second option, because he does sound clueless about how to "save" Malaysia. He does not even have a whiff of an idea on how to pull the country back from the brink or even the honesty to say why race and religion have become so combustible in recent months.
Instead he is bleating about the possibility of another riot if racial and religious tensions are not kept in check. And playing the dangerous and irresponsible game of assigning blame to one community: non-Muslims.
It seems that every few days, one Umno politician or someone from their subsidiaries – Perkasa and Isma – is warning about a repeat of the May 13, 1969, riot which saw racial violence.
And they are doing so not because they truly care for Malaysia or for what has been built over 57 years, but because it is part of their strategy to intimidate, scare and threaten those who have stopped following them meekly like sheep.
In an interview with Umno mouthpiece, Utusan Malaysia, Muhyiddin said: "As deputy prime minister, every night before I sleep, I think about how to manage the country. Someone sent me a text message (asking) what will happen to the Malays, why is Islam being insulted and other similar issues.
"These things are definitely happening and it is worrying. We must all return to the right path. Let religion as well as our culture and customs be our strength."
He said Malaysians must appreciate the peace they had enjoyed and cautioned them against fighting among themselves.
Sound advice. But Muhyiddin should do more than just talk, more so to a publication that has done a splendid job of stoking racial and religious strife.
It seems odd that he suggests the onset of racial riots given that the "individuals" and "groups" that have had their Constitutional rights taken away or restricted are still seeking redress through the system.
For example, the Christians who lost their right to use the word Allah are still hoping for a resolution through proper channels. They have not gone to the streets or set up terror groups.
Similarly, opposition politicians who have been convicted or charged with offences under the Sedition Act are fighting for their freedom through the legal system, despite the odds being stacked against them. They have not set up a government in exile or gone outside the system.
Even the non-Muslim families fighting body-snatching or conversion cases are seeking their day of justice in court, and not through civil disobedience or violence.
The only individuals threatening and constantly talking about riots and bloodshed are those belonging to Umno, Perkasa and Isma. They do so because the alternative is too difficult for them. The alternative entails speaking sensibly, acting justly and behaving with grace and humility.
Malaysia needs someone who can heal the country and speak and act justly. Wish Muhyiddin ponders these facts before he goes to sleep every night. – July 5, 2014.

Malaysia could see another bloody incident if no efforts were made to preserve interethnic harmony, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said in a report published by Utusan Malaysia.
According to the Malay daily, Muhyiddin said the growing tensions between the different racial groups could potentially lead to a dark moment in the history of the nation.
"That is why all sorts of assumptions are raised when ethnic ties become strained and unhealthy. This could lead to that incident, and I do not want to mention the date (May 13, 1969)," Muhyiddin was quoted as saying by Utusan.
Although Muhyiddin did not explicitly state the date, the Umno-owned paper added May 13, 1969, in parenthesis to his quotes in its report.
Muhyiddin, who is Umno deputy president, also urged the people to appreciate the peace they had enjoyed since independence, and warned them not to fight among one another.
"That is why we must look back at what those who struggled for independence did. We have been independent for almost 57 years and are able to form a united society.
"(Before this) there have been differences and misunderstandings, but not to the point that we fight among each other or are torn apart," he said.
Muhyiddin also expressed fears over the insults hurled towards the Malays and Muslims of late.

Malaysia is no stranger to racial and religious rows, which have sparked nationwide controversy.
Provocation from pro Umno, Malay pressure groups often hog the headlines, with little to no protest from the government.
Last January, PKR's Machang Bubuk state assemblyman Lee Khai Loon became a victim of racism when a group of Umno supporters gathered to protest his earlier "kangkung" demonstration.
In February, a group of individuals calling themselves the Majlis Jemaah Islam slaughtered two chickens and offered monetary reward to any individual willing to slap DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok for allegedly insulting Islam and Malay rulers.
In May, a group of Umno youths gathered before the DAP headquarters and threatened to burn it down, but no action was taken against them. – July 5, 2014.

1. As reported in Utusan Melayu today, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said "the race riots that had erupted on May 13, 1969 can be repeated if the breakup of the citizens cannot be contained while the Constitution continues to be questioned".
Which part of the Constitution is being questioned? It is a crime to question entrenched provisions of the Constitution.
However, the correct implementation of certain provisions of the Constitution can, I believe, be questioned, according to Article 10(4) of the Constitution.
Clearly, since 1971, there is much that is questionable in that manner which has a direct consequence on inefficient use of taxation revenues and the human resources of the country.
For example, Malays, Chinese and Indians form the population of both Malaysia and one of its former states, the Republic of Singapore.
Singapore was given the yellow card by Malaysia in 1965 and had to make its own way. With a sixth of Malaysia's human resources and 1/500 of its land, and no oil, gas and other natural resources, Singapore's GDP overtook Malaysia's from 2011. Baby David became economically stronger than giant Goliath.
Should not one question why? Is talk of race riots the chief response to poor performance?

Which specific criticism is he referring to, and by whom, that has become a habit?
Is he referring to those calling the Malaysian Chinese "penceroboh" or trespassers, calling Malaysian Indians and Malaysian Chinese "pendatangs" or immigrants, when many have been here for over 100 years and longer even than some who call themselves bumiputras?
What customs, culture and morality is it that approves physically intruding into the midst of a wedding ceremony and interrogating the bride, demanding to see her identity papers and then taking her away, resplendent in all her bridal finery, for further interrogation?
What customs, culture and morality are those that deem it 'normal" to barge into the prayers for the recently departed, load the corpse onto a waiting truck and disappear, only to reappear two days later after a Court has, at the application of the deceased family, granted an order that the removal of the body was improper and it should be returned immediately?
What culture, customs and morality are those that sanction the confiscation from the Bible Society of Malaysia's (BSM) premises of 321 new Bibles written in the National Language (which language policy has been made a crime to criticise) or in the language of the Iban minority of East Malaysia, and those Bibles are still missing after the Attorney-General's direction that no law was broken by the BSM?
And what culture, customs and morality gives certain institutions such hubris that they insist on keeping the Bibles or calling for their destruction and defy the A-G's direction on the matter, because they claim to be responsible only to God?

Who kept the Search and Rescue for MH370 continuing for eight long days in the sea off Vietnam when military radar had detected the aircraft (sans transponders) making a turn-back and flying back through Malaysian airspace early on March 8?
This made China and Vietnam angry and began to create a worldwide disbelief in news put out by the Malaysian government.
Who or what failed to make the RMAF scramble jets which is military Standard Operating Procedure when the unidentified plane re-entered and passed through Malaysian airspace on March 8?
Why did Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein make a facetious reply to the Australian interviewer that no jets were scrambled "because then we would have to shoot down the plane"?
Had the Malaysian fighters been sent up, the location of MH370 would have been known, bringing closure for the families and saving hundreds of millions of USD.
Till today, the location is unknown and the search continues. Yet, there is not an iota of culpability admitted by the air force or the Ministry of Defence, who seem protected by a large, invisible umbrella. Instead, new radar equipment and systems is being talked about while the non-activation of the old equipment is a non-event.
4. Malaysians of all races want peace and, with few exceptions, other than the determined troublemakers, can get on with each other. Look at the Malays, Indians and Chinese peacefully lining up in the morning to buy their "fix" of nasi lemak from the Malay lady by the roadside or at the market. We have had almost 200 years to learn to get along and we do get along.
The creators of 60-year-old communalistic parties, who cannot see any other way of doing business, are the ones at their wit's end. They have succeeded in bringing progress of a sort, but in doing so, have become failures because they are unable to evolve themselves.
What will happen to them? If their only solution is to talk darkly of riots, and foment frictions through proxies, this means they really have become useless. Better to put themselves out of misery.
With 47% of the votes at GE13, they should have only 104 MP's and not 134 as at present.
Essentially, we have a lame-duck administration until the people's choice does get reflected in the number of MPs. Let us hope that will materialize at GE14, on or before May 2018.
In the meantime, please take a good, hard look at the Man in the Mirror and let us not hear of riots or rumours of riots. – July 5, 2014.
DPM’s ‘critical situation’ remark merits urgent attention from Putrajaya, says DAP

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's remarks that another bloody incident is possible has thrown Malaysia into a "critical situation" that requires an emergency Cabinet meeting, the DAP said today.
Party stalwart Lim Kit Siang (pic) also urged the Barisan Nasional (BN) Supreme Council to convene over the remark, which he said was a direct confession that Putrajaya's nation-building policies for the past five years had failed.
"The country is faced with the most critical situation in 45 years if a deputy prime minister could publicly say that another May 13 is not impossible - as no prime minister or deputy prime minister in Malaysia have made such a statement in the past four decades," Lim said in a statement today.
He said the Cabinet needed to make clear whether it endorsed Muhyiddin's warning in Pagoh, Johor yesterday, as well as what it proposed to do to save Malaysia from another bloody racial riot.
"The first duty of the Federal government is to ensure that another May 13 is not possible.
"A Federal government which allowed ethnic ties to deteriorate until the deputy prime minister could publicly suggest that another May 13 is not impossible has lost all moral and political justification to continue to rule the country," said Lim.
He added that if no action was taken, this would raise the question of whether Muhyiddin was just giving legitimacy to "a small group of extremists responsible for the worst racial and religious polarisation in the nation's history in the past year".
Lim, who is Gelang Patah MP, stressed that Muhyiddin's statement also marked the failure of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's five-year efforts in creating a united Malaysia.
"Najib's failure will be all the more conspicuous as it would also mean the total failure of his 1Malaysia policy to create a Malaysia where Malaysians regard themselves as Malaysians first and their race, religion and region second – which had been publicly repudiated by Muhyiddin right from the beginning," said Lim.
It was also an affront to Najib's Global Movement of Moderates campaign, which was set up for “the voices of moderation to drown the voices of extremism”, he added.

Controversial Muslim rights group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) today claimed that DAP was capable of causing another May 13 racial riot if the party was left unchecked.
Isma vice-president Abdul Rahman Mt Dali wrote on the NGO's website that DAP's struggle had caused a lot of hurt and pain to the feelings of Muslims.
"If DAP is left alone, it could cause splits and divisions similar to what happened on May 13, 1969," Abdul Rahman said.
He said DAP was a party which practised socialist and secular ideologies, and demanded equal rights for all races.
"The party also disputes Bumiputera rights," Abdul Rahman said, adding that socialist and secular ideologies were against Islamic principles.
"DAP has also brought the concept of a Malaysian Malaysia, which has been labelled as the 'New Malaysia'," Abdul Rahman said, adding this was against the Federal Constitution.
"The party has rejected Malaysia as an Islamic nation and the Muslims as the original race who should receive special rights.
"DAP does not acknowledge the social contract and pretends to forget about it although it was drawn up during the early days of Independence.
"Malays sacrificed a lot to accept foreign immigrants (pendatang) as citizens in a wholesale manner in the spirit of the social contract although their loyalty to Malaya had yet to be ascertained."
Abdul Rahman said there were even some "pendatang" at that time who could not speak a word of Bahasa Malaysia.
"But ever since DAP managed to garner 90% of Chinese support in Malaysia, they have become arrogant and bold enough to pressure Putrajaya for the interests of the Chinese community.
"DAP has been trying to change Malaysia's identity from an Islamic nation to a country which has a non-Islamic status," Abdul Rahman said.
He said the party had even challenged the position of Malays and claimed that Malays were not the original inhabitants of Malaysia and as such, there was no need for special rights to be given to the Malays.
Abdul Rahman said all of these was in direct violation of the meaning and spirit of the Federal Constitution.
He said DAP leaders had been fighting for the word Allah to be used in Bahasa Malaysia Bibles and have been against the implementation of hudud.
In a nutshell, Abdul Rahman said, DAP's actions and that of the Chinese community who support the party, were a threat to national unity and harmony.
Abdul Rahman said Malaysia was the inheritance of Malays for the past 60,000 years and the country had been an Islamic nation since the early 15th century.
"Malaysia's status has remained unchanged even until today despite the entry of intruders of various races and nationalities.
"Isma's stand is that the Malays are deserving of the special rights conferred upon them as this land is their inheritance.
"Malays are still not strong because they have been plagued by various colonies and intruders over the past 450 years.
"The riches of the land have been plundered by intruders and colonials of ancient times. Some of these riches were taken back to the West, and some to China."
Early this month, Isma sparked anger among non-Muslims when its president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman said Chinese migrants brought to Tanah Melayu by the British were "trespassers".
Abdullah Zaik had also warned non-Muslims in Malaysia that they had no right to oppose the plan to implement hudud, and said non-Muslims should understand that there were limitations to what they could say.
He had said non-Muslims “should be thankful that they have more than what they need in this country”.
“I don't see what their contributions are for them to be given so many privileges in the first place,” Abdullah Zaik had said.
Abdullah Zaik had also claimed that hudud should not just be imposed on Muslims but on all Malaysians.
Following his comments against non-Muslims, police began investigating Abdullah Zaik under the Sedition Act 1948 after numerous reports were lodged.

An implied threat of a May 13 repeat was made by former Perkasa deputy president Datuk Zulkifli Noordin in an article through his blog zul4kulim.blogspot.com.
Nordin said: “If you do not stop provoking and inciting, you will only invite May 13 to repeat itself.
“Go and read the book 13th May: Before & After by the late former Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and National Operation Council (MAGERAN) Report October 6 1969, then you will realise what you are doing now are provocations that will only invite May 13 to repeat.”
The article came in the wake of criticism against the recent Federal Court refusal to grant leave for the Catholic Church to challenge a court decision upholding a ban by the Home Ministry on the use of “Allah” in its Herald newsletter.
The article also claimed that right-minded Christians would certainly have opposed the rude and insolent manner in which “religious extremists” are dealing with the issue.
He had labelled those who had challenged the Muslim community with threats of continuing to use the word “Allah” in churches and in their worship as extremists.
“It was just a simple matter of translation whereby the proper word is God instead of Allah.
“But those dissatisfied are trying to portray as if Christians are being oppressed and not allowed to practise their religion.”
Nordin went on to insinuate that they are purposely looking for a repeat of May 13.
“Peace and harmony-loving Malaysians have no desire to go through it because we know the hardship and difficulties caused by chauvinistic racial and religious extremists.”
The “Allah” issue appear to be far from settled as it has been reported that Sarawakian Jill Ireland Lawrence Bill and the Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) church in Sabah are eager to get an answer as to what extent they can use the word “Allah”, following the Federal Court decision.
The SIB had their religious books confiscated at the Sepang Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in 2007.
A year later, the authority seized Christian CDs from Jill Ireland, also at LCCT.
Both had filed submissions, expected to be heard next week, on whether it was proper for the Home Ministry to seized the publications and CDs for containing the word “Allah”.

Kumpulan pendesak Melayu Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Kebangsaan (Perkasa) hari ini tidak menolak isu kangkung yang dimainkan oleh pembangkang dan penyokong Umno boleh menjadi punca berulangnya tragedi berdarah 13 Mei.
Ketua Penerangan Perkasa Zahid Md Arip (gambar) berkata, isu kangkung yang dimainkan kali ini dianggap sebagai keterlaluan malah menyelar pihak pembangkang sebagai “jumud” kerana memperbesarkan hal tersebut.
"Ini terjadi apabila ada satu pihak yang tidak tahu menghormati pemimpin negara dan satu lagi yang cuba mempertahankan institusi apabila dipermainkan begitu.
"Maka sekiranya dibiarkan berterusan yang dimainkan secara melampau maka kemungkinan berlakunya 13 Mei sekali lagi," katanya dalam satu sidang media di Ibu Pejabat Perkasa, Kuala Lumpur hari ini.
Bagaimanapun menurut Zahid, Perkasa tetap dengan pendirian mereka yang akan menentang sebarang usaha untuk mengulangi tragedi 13 Mei.
"Kita tetap dengan pendirian tidak mahu 13 Mei kerana menganggap isu itu telah selesai oleh ibu bapa generasi terdahulu," katanya.
Beliau berkata isu kangkung merupakan satu contoh apabila adanya pihak yang menggunakan kebebasan diberikan melebihi had yang ditetapkan.
Katanya, bagaimanapun marah rakyat kepada kerajaan kerana peningkatan kos sara hidup, namun kedudukan Najib sebagai perdana menteri haruslah dihormati semua rakyat di negara ini termasuklah pembangkang.
"Tengok cara isu itu dimainkan apabila keterlaluan melepasi keterbatasan yang ditetapkan maka jahanamlah negara," katanya.
Zahid juga mengambil contoh sebagai isu penarikan balik saman Umno ke atas pemimpin PKR Tian Chua memberikan isyarat jelas untuk pembangkang terus mempermainkan parti Melayu itu.
"Ini merupakan kesalahan daripada ibu pejabat Umno apabila kononya cuba memperlihatkan pendekatan terbuka namun akhirnya dikotak-katikkan pembangkang termasuk dalam isu kangkung ini," katanya.
Malah paling dikesalinya apabila adanya pihak terlalu taksub dengan isu kangkung sehingga telah menenggelamkan perkara lain yang perlu diberi perhatian.
"Ketika dalam satu majlis penyerahan bantuan mangsa banjir baru-baru ini, orang tidak peduli mengenai usaha tersebut sebaliknya bertanyakan pasal isu kangkung.
"Kita tidak faham apa yang begitu besar dengan isu tersebut hina sangatkan perdana menteri menyebut mengenai sayur kangkung," katanya.
Ditanya mengenai provakasi 13 Mei yang dilakukan oleh peserta Umno pada perhimpunan balas “flash mob kangkung” yang dianjurkan pembangkang, beliau mempertahankan tindakan itu sebagai luahan emosi.
"Itu perkara normal apabila orang tengah marah maka mereka tidak boleh kawal perasaan itu macam-macam boleh keluar.
"Kalau nak tuduh ia dicetuskan Perkasa, yang kononnya turut serta perhimpunan itu, mana kita nak tahu, ahli kita banyak," katanya.
Pada Ahad lalu, sebagai serangan balas tarian “flash mob kangkung” yang dianjurkan Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri Machang Bubuk dari PKR Lee Khai Loon minggu lau, mendakwa pengikut parti itu bertukar ganas hingga menyebabkan dua orang awam tercedera.
Malah pengikut Umno juga dikatakan turut memainkan isu perkauman dan agama sebagai serangan balas kepada Pakatan Rakyat. – 20 Januari, 2014.
