Latin American gang ‘hacks’ ATMs in two states, RM800,000 stolen

A Latin American gang is believed to be behind a spate of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) "hijacks" involving more than RM800,000 being stolen from banks in Selangor and Johor over the last 24 hours.

The gang was said to have used a high tech software and modified mobile SIM card to bypass the ATM system and "empty" the ATM machines through multiple cash withdrawals done by its members.

Two of the cases were reported in Selangor and one in Johor according to police. The police added that this is the first reported case of money being stolen from ATM machines using such a method.

The first incident was reported in Batu Pahat, Johor at about 9.48am yesterday where the gang managed to withdraw RM265,000 through a series of withdrawals after it managed to hack into the ATM system.

The gang left behind only RM5,103 in the machine.

Their actions were recorded on closed circuit television cameras (CCTV).

It is believed that the software used by the gang, coupled with the "altered" mobile SIM card, had allowed them to override the withdrawal limit, which is usually set at a maximum of RM10,000 per account.

Police said two more incidents occurred in Selangor, specifically Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya about eight hours later.

The criminals, believed to be from the same gang which had struck in Johor, made off with about RM610,000 using the same modus operandi.

Subang Jaya police chief assistant commissioner of police Yahya Ramli told Bernama that in the incident, the men withdrew money from two ATMs hundreds of times in one day.

He said the case is now being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Computer Criminal Act 1997.
“This is the first time such a modus operandi has been used. The suspects hacked into the ATM system to get to the money without having to break open the machine,” he added, according to Bernama.

The suspects were believed to have made 137 withdrawals at around 5.30pm in Subang Jaya yesterday.
The bank management only realised that something was not right when they conducted a check on the particular ATMs.

The same thing also happened at two ATMs in Petaling Jaya at about the same time yesterday.

Petaling Jaya police chief assistant commissioner Azmi Abu Kassim said CCTV checks showed the suspects had opened the top of the two ATMs and had inserted something in it at midnight.

A total of RM303,000 was missing from the affected ATMs. – September 28, 2014.

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry is monitoring websites and blogs offering Malaysians to go to Syria and Iraq and fight there in the name of jihad.

Its deputy minister Datuk Jailani Johari said the ministry was aware of the increasing number of websites and blogs carrying such calls lately with information that could confuse the public.

"The ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is cooperating closely with various investigation agencies including the Royal Malaysian Police on the problem.

"Usually, the MCMC will assist in the forensic aspect if requested by the police because according to the law, this matter comes under the jurisdiction of the police as it is a criminal offence."
Jailani said this to reporters in Hulu Terengganu today.

Jailani, who is also Hulu Terengganu MP, also advised the public to always refer to agencies like the police, the Home Ministry and MCMC on any dubious information found on websites and blogs.

He cited websites that offered people the chance to be armed fighters in Syria and Iraq, which he said was wrong and against those countries' law.

"Don't easily fall for such offers... there are certain quarters disseminating such news and offers in order to become popular," he said, adding that Malaysians should use the Internet wisely and for good things instead of interfering in the affairs of other countries.

Recently, Wisma Putra disclosed that 15 Malaysians were allegedly killed in Syria after joining the terrorist and jihadist activities of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).

The claim was reportedly made by a Syrian official based in New York at a press conference on June 18, where he alleged that citizens of other countries, including from Asean, were also involved in such activities in Syria. – Bernama, July 7, 2014.

Consumer Rights

Internet is not a free service, although government has launched free WiFi and Internet in the non-urban areas to let the people in those area to enjoy the same opportunity to gain knowledge and explore the world. Consumer who subscribed their own Internet Account have to deal with their bills monthly, daily or by period defending on the plan which they have subscribed. It is unfair if Government is controlling the speed of the Internet for political purpose. Of course, there is quota limits for the Internet service based on the plan subscribed. But if the connection are unstable, just guess how many times a consumer need to press the refresh button? Just because the connection has failed or time-out which is causing more data transferred during the page-refreshing, just for the sake of loading a complete page. And when the page has just complete loaded guess what? The ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as Celcom, Digi and Maxis send you a message saying "Your quota volume usage has exceeded, please purchase for more volume". Sometimes consumer have to face and waste a lot of time just for the sake of getting the Internet connection to be connected because of the unstable connection and bad signal. Government has no rights to control the Internet speed. Controlling it won't change the attitude of a kid or youth if the parents and school still failed to educate them about the good values. Just think about the places where there are no internet service available and the times when Internet have not existed yet, but criminals still occurs. Good values are educated by good examples and good attention, not by force. The increasing percentage of criminals in our Country are also caused by the bad examples shown by the surrounding adults, not enough attention by 24-hours working parents and the influences of the Movies and TV Show. Most Films in our country nowadays are more about gangster such as "KL Gangster", "Bini-Biniku Gangster" and etc. I think those are the issues where Government should be more focused on. For example, If a consumer purchased one nasi lemak for breakfast, should Government stop or control the consumer from eating it? The same thing with Internet. - JIM
