Police today revealed that Malaysian militants arrested earlier this year were planning to attack several pubs, discos and even the Carlsberg brewery in Shah Alam.

Federal Special Branch principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Pitchay Mydin said the militants were supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).

"The suspects admitted that they wanted to overthrow what they perceived to be an un-Islamic government in Putrajaya," Ayob told The Malaysian Insider today.

"Besides planning attacks on pubs and discotheques, the suspects were also targeting the Carlsberg brewery.
"One of their main objectives was to target Putrajaya," Ayob said, referring to the 19 extremists whom police picked up between January and June.

"Based on our investigations, the suspects had raised tens of thousands of ringgit from their fundraising activities."

Ayob also said that between 20 and 30 Malaysians have gone to Syria to fight with Isis, although figures could be higher.

"What we have detected so far is that figure but police believe the figure could be a lot higher than that."

Malaysian factory worker, Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki, died as a suicide bomber in May, and Ayob revealed that another Malaysian is believed to have died as well.

"I cannot reveal the details yet as we are trying to confirm the identity of a second Malaysian who is believed to have perished in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East."

But, Ayob said the activities of the Malaysian militants arrested thus far were merely in the planning stage.

"We are constantly monitoring the activities of suspected militants and their accomplices," he said, declining to elaborate further.

Police in June arrested three men in Sandakan, Sabah, who were allegedly militants.

One of the suspects had received training by the Abu Sayyaf Group in the southern Philippines, while another was a Royal Malaysian Navy personnel.

The three suspects had links with 11 people who had been arrested by police in April for involvement in militant activities.

The militants' main purpose was to send fighters to Syria after they had been given training, police revealed.

Isis fighters have successfully cut a bloody swathe across Iraq, overrunning large areas of the country and also conquering a substantial part of the northern region. – August 15, 2014.

Muslim rebel attacks kill 18 in Philippines - The Malaysian Insider

An escalation of fighting between the Philippine army and a breakaway Muslim rebel group in the country's south killed 18 people in a single day of violence, the military said Tuesday.

Seventeen members of the rebel Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and one soldier were slain in the day-long violence Monday in the strife-torn southern island of Mindanao, Brigadier General Eduardo Pangilinan, the area's military commander, said. "One of our soldiers was killed during the (initial) attack. The 17 enemies were killed when our troops fired back and during the subsequent encounters," the general told reporters.

There was a lull in fighting on Tuesday but the military remained on alert, with helicopter gunships flying overhead and armoured vehicles parked on the streets of Cotabato City, a trading centre in the area. "There have been no additional encounters but we are continuing our operations on the ground," Pangilinan added.

Fighting began in the early hours of Monday morning as BIFF guerrillas attacked military outposts in the violence-scarred province of Maguindanao. The violence later spread to the neighbouring province of North Cotabato before the rebels pulled back, Pangilinan said. BIFF spokesman Abu Misry Mama disputed the military's version of events, saying only four of his fighters had been killed. "Only four have died. We would never lie about our casualties because it is an honour to die as a mujahedeen," he said. He said the BIFF had launched the attacks in retaliation for the military's abduction of a Muslim father and son on July 3. The military has previously denied his accusation, branding this as propaganda. Regional social welfare agencies said that at least nine civilians were wounded and over 300 families had been forced to flee due to the new fighting.

The BIFF split from the main Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), in 2008. The 10,000-strong MILF has entered into a ceasefire and peace talks with the government for the creation of an autonomous region for Muslim-dominated areas in the south of this largely Christian nation. However the BIFF, which is believed to have just a few hundred fighters, has rejected the negotiations and still demands a separate Islamic state in the southern Philippines. It has previously launched attacks in Mindanao in efforts to disrupt the peace efforts.

Various Muslim armed groups including the MILF have waged a rebellion in the southern Philippines since the 1970s aimed at winning independence or autonomy for the country's Muslim minority in Mindanao, which they regard as their ancestral homeland. Abducted constable cries while speaking to his wife - The Rakyat Post

It just broke Syarifah Erna Berson’s heart to hear her husband, Constable Zakiah Aleip, cry when he called recently. “He is a very strong man and to hear him cry just breaks my heart,” said the 23-year-old, describing Zakiah, who was kidnapped by a group of eight heavily armed men from southern Philippines at the Mabul Water Bungalow Resort on July 12.

Syarifah said when she first received his calls, just a couple of days after his abduction, she dared not call him back.

“The second time he called, we spoke for about two to three minutes. He cried and told me he missed our son and family.

“He also told me he was worried about our well being. I had to be strong and told him that we are doing fine, and told him to take care and stay healthy,” she said, when met after receiving assistance from the police during the launch of the Op Selamat campaign at the Segama Waterfront here today. The couple have a four-month-old son, Muhammad Hisham Izzuddin. Expressing her worries about his safety, deep down she believed he is safe.

“He told me that he hoped he would be reunited with us before Hari Raya, so we can celebrate the festival as a family as planned.” Sharifah said she prayed day and night for her husband’s safe return, adding that her parents-in-law had been very helpful and understanding.

“We confided in each other, and although they put up a strong front, I know they are hurting inside. They are very worried of their son’s safety,” she said.

Zakiah was kidnapped by the gunmen, while his colleague Corporal Ab Rajah Jamuan was killed in the 11am incident. Meanwhile, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said they were working hard to ensure Zakiah was released before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“The police and leaders are in the middle of negotiating for his release, and we hope it can happen soon,” he said, declining to elaborate in the matter.

“Outsiders have no right to ask for information on the matter and I don’t have the right to share it either. All that matters is that he is safe and well up to now." He said the kidnappers had been in contact with Zakiah’s wife as well as police officials. Read more: http://ift.tt/WtB071

Curfew in six Sabah districts start today - The Rakyat Post

KOTA KINABALU, July 19 : Police will impose the 12-hour curfew in six districts under the Sabah Eastern Sabah Security Zone effective today. The curfew between 6pm to 6am in Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Semporna, Kunak and Tawau will, however, be focused in the coastal areas, as well as its waters, and will last for two weeks, until Aug 2.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the curfew would cover Tanjung Pundaras in Sandakan right up to the Tawau jetty.

“The curfew under the Police Act is intended is a short term measure only to address an immediate public order or security situation. That is why it is limited to 15 days in all (1 plus 14 days).

“In United States, it is called ‘clear and present danger’, but in Sabah, in eastern Sabah that is, the situation is different. Threat to public order and public security is now, real and continuous.

“Therefore there is a need either to invoke Section 3 of Public Order (Preservation) A 1958 to proclaim a ‘danger area’ or to use provisions under Sabah’s Preservation of Public Order Ordinance 1961 to declare the curfew,” said Jalaluddin.

He said under the curfew, approved by the Home.Ministry as stipulated under Section 31 (1) of the Police Act 1967 and Section 31 (4) of the same act, only security forces are allowed to be on the locations mentioned.

“The curfew is imposed to overcome security issues in these areas, particularly kidnappings and intrusions.

“During the 12-hour curfew, no sea activities are allowed, including in coastal areas, and those who fail to observe this, action can be taken against them under Section 31 (2) of the Police Act 1967, which carries a fine of RM500 or six months jail, upon conviction,” he said.

“During this two weeks, if we spot activities involving intruders or kidnappers, that leads to hot pursuit, the shoot-on-sight order will be implemented,” he said.

Jalaluddin said the curfew was imposed following a meeting with the Eastern Sabah Security Command officials, adding that there are 22 focus points between the Philippine and Sabah borders.

He was saying this when presenting a briefing on the issue at the Sabah Police Headquarters in Kepayan. Also present was Esscom commander Deputy Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun.

“We have distributed notices to the public, particularly business operators, and owners of resorts and fish farms, as well as fishermen in the six districts.

“However, exemptions can be given by applying for a special permit to conduct activities at night and for emergencies only.

“Fishermen who wish to operate during the curfew period may be allowed, for as long they refrain from entering the restricted areas, set under the curfew zone,” he said.

Jalaluddin said he has given the district police chiefs in the affected areas the authority to distribute the forms for special permits, but it can only be done when it is approved.

Probe into leaked info on possible Sabah attack by armed men - The Rakyat Post

Police are investigating a message, supposedly confidential and believed to be from the police, on a possible attack by a group of gunmen in the east coast of Sabah.

The message has gone viral on social media.

“We are investigating whether it is a rumour or not, but whatever it is, I am attending a meeting in Semporna today to discuss all aspects, particularly security issues,” said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman.

He, however, assured that the state was safe and urged people to stop spreading rumours as it would only create panic.

“Our security forces are ready and able to control and handle any challenges that may happen.”

He said this when met after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman presented the state government’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri goodies to eight security agencies at the Tun Ahmad Raffae auditorium at the Tun Mustapha Tower here.

Rumours are circulating that a large group of armed men, wearing black shirts and fatigues, are just waiting for the right time to head to Sabah waters on high-speed boats, to attack Lahad Datu and Semporna.

The message stated that 45 people on six high-speed boats had docked at the Bakungan Besar, near the Selingan Island in Sandakan, and urged all security officers and personnel to be on alert at all times.

Jalaluddin declined to comment on a curfew which is expected to be imposed in four districts — Semporna, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Sandakan.

He said any announcement on this would be made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak tomorrow.

“Whatever the announcement may be, I would like to assure the people of Sabah that the police are ready.”

The curfew was announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi after a meeting with several ministries and government agencies in Bukit Aman.

He had stressed that it was meant to beef up security in the east coast of Sabah.

Kidnappers demand ‘10 million’ for policeman’s release, says report

The kidnappers holding a marine policeman abducted from Mabul Island in Sabah last Saturday have demanded a '10 million' ransom, although no currency was stated, the New Straits Times reported today.

It said a day after the incident, the kidnappers made a brief call at 10.50pm, ending it by saying, "I demand 10 million".

However, they did not say if the figure was in exchange for Constable Zakiah Alep's release.

Quoting sources, the NST said the call was made to the Semporna marine police headquarters’ operations centre, and Zakiah was the first to speak.

An inspector who answered the call was told that the kidnappers wanted nothing less than "10 million", without stating the currency.

The call then ended but sources told the NST that Zakiah was well and not mistreated.

“There have been several calls from Zakiah, including from his own phone to his wife, as well as the marine police operations centre. There was also a call made on Monday at 10pm from a foreign-registered number.

“We believe this was also his captors telling us that Zakiah had not been harmed, so that they will get what they want,” a source close to the ongoing investigations told the daily.

Zakiah was abducted on July 12 by gunmen who came in two speedboats fitted with additional outboard engines, while his colleague Corporal Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was shot dead in an ambush at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort.

Rajah is expected to be given a posthumous promotion to sergeant, according to the NST.

Intelligence sources told the daily that they believed the gunmen had wanted to capture policemen on duty and had been observing their duty roster.

“They came straight for them. There was a Chinese tourist from the United Kingdom whom they had by the arm, but they let him get away," the source was quoted as saying. – July 17, 2014.
