KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 , 2014:

The two hand grenades which exploded in front of a nightclub at Sun Complex in Jalan Bukit Bintang early today were identified as M67.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa told Bernama the hand grenades were identified based on their pin numbers.

“The hand grenades were made in 1983 and used during war. They are not the type used by our security forces.”

The explosion which killed car jockey Tiong Kwong Yie, 36, at 4.20am was believed to involve secret societies.

Twelve others, including foreign tourists, were hurt in the grenade attack, believed to be the first at an entertainment centre in this country.

The 12 hurt were six locals, a Thai man, a Singaporean man and four Chinese women.

Meanwhile, a representative of a funeral arrangement company said Tiong’s wife was expected to arrive at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) tonight from Sarawak.

He said Thiong died at 10.20am while undergoing surgery due to severe injuries and the autopsy would be conducted tomorrow morning.

A victim, known only as Yaw, said he was drinking in the nightclub at 4.15am when he saw objects thrown from the second floor before exploding.

“They looked like bombs. I was hurt in the left leg,” he said when met at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

A female tourist from China said she was in front of the nightclubs’s entrance and was shocked by the explosion.

She suffered a minor injury in her right leg.

“When I came out, I saw some things falling.

“After two to three seconds, they exploded. I then realised that my right leg was injured by fragments,” she told reporters at the front counter of HKL’s Emergency Department.

Kuala Lumpur, 4 Okt - Polis mengesahkan dua wanita dan dua lelaki adalah antara 22 rakyat Malaysia yang berada di Syria yang dipercayai terbabit dengan kumpulan militan Negara Islam (IS).

Ketua Penolong Pengarah Bahagian Counter Terrorism, Cawangan Khas Bukit Aman, Datuk Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay berkata berdasarkan maklumat risikan, dua daripada mereka merupakan pasangan berusia 23 dan 29 tahun berasal dari Selangor dan Terengganu.

Beliau berkata seorang lagi wanita rakyat Malaysia yang terbabit merupakan seorang doktor berusia 26 tahun yang berkahwin dengan anggota kumpulan militan IS.

Sementara seorang lagi merupakan lelaki Malaysia berusia 35 tahun yang pergi ke Syria bersama isterinya yang berumur 46 tahun, seorang warganegara asing," katanya kepada Bernama.

Mengulas mengenai kenyataan doktor wanita itu melalui Facebook ‘Diary of a Muhajirah’ yang cuba mempengaruhi wanita tempatan menyertai militan IS, Ayub Khan berkata kenyataan itu adalah membimbangkan, memandangkan pengaruh melalui laman sosial adalah terlalu kuat.

"Kita sedang kenal pasti identiti, latar belakang serta maklumat keluarga wanita ini. Kita juga akan siasat bagaimana dia boleh terpengaruh untuk ke sana (Syria).

"Memang ada daya tarikan kuat sebab mereka boleh menggunakan Facebook untuk menarik wanita khususnya gadis tempatan dengan begitu mudah. Mereka boleh berkongsi gambar kononnya penginapan serta makanan disediakan dan pergi ke sana hanya untuk berjihad bersama mujahiddin.

"Dengan berkahwin dengan anggota IS, mereka dianggap turut mendapat pahala berjihad dan dapat menambahkan zuriat mujahiddin,” katanya.

Doktor wanita itu juga dikesan aktif memuat naik status mengenai pengalamannya serta memberikan petua kepada sesiapa yang merancang untuk mengikutinya bagi memudahkan pergerakan mereka, melalui Tumblr dan Twitter.

Selain itu, Ayub Khan berkata terdapat juga kegiatan mengeksploitasi wanita dan gadis untuk dijadikan hamba seks kumpulan militan itu.

Bagaimanapun setakat ini ia tidak melibatkan rakyat Malaysia, katanya.

Media tempatan sebelum ini memetik laporan Pertubuhan Bangsa Bersatu bahawa pada bulan lepas sahaja, kira-kira 1,500 wanita dan kanak-kanak perempuan telah dipaksa kumpulan militan berkenaan untuk dijadikan hamba seks.

Sejak operasi khas ke atas anasir militan dilancarkan Bahagian Counter Terrorism pada 28 April lepas sehingga setakat ini bulan ini, sebanyak 22 individu telah ditahan kerana disyaki terlibat dengan kegiatan militan itu.

The police today confirmed that a 26-year-old female doctor was one of the 22 Malaysians in Syria reportedly involved in the activities of the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

Principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division of the Special Branch at Bukit Aman, SAC Datuk Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay, said the doctor was married to a Malaysian who was a member of the IS group.

He also said that a couple, a 23-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, who hailed from Selangor and Terengganu, respectively, were also among the 22 in Syria.

"A Malaysian man aged 35 had also gone to Syria with his 46-year-old wife, a foreign national," he told Bernama when contacted.
IS has taken control of huge areas in Syria and Iraq and proclaimed a caliphate. Its members are drawn from people in the two countries as well as foreigners.

Ayub Khan said the doctor was attempting to influence Malaysian women through a Facebook account and added that this was worrying.

"We are trying to establish the identity and background of and obtain more information about the woman's family. We are investigating how she could have been influenced to go there (Syria).

"Of course, she can use Facebook to draw women and girls easily. She can share photographs to show that accommodation and food are provided and they would only be involved in fighting alongside the mujahiddeen," he said.

However, he said, they would not be aware that there was exploitation of women and girls as sex slaves of the militants although so far it might not have involved Malaysians.

The United Nations has reported that the IS militants had kidnapped women and girls and forced them to be sex slaves.

Since the launch of a special operation by the Counter Terrorism Division on April 28, twenty-two individuals have been detained on suspicion of having been involved in militant activities.

Latin American gang ‘hacks’ ATMs in two states, RM800,000 stolen

A Latin American gang is believed to be behind a spate of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) "hijacks" involving more than RM800,000 being stolen from banks in Selangor and Johor over the last 24 hours.

The gang was said to have used a high tech software and modified mobile SIM card to bypass the ATM system and "empty" the ATM machines through multiple cash withdrawals done by its members.

Two of the cases were reported in Selangor and one in Johor according to police. The police added that this is the first reported case of money being stolen from ATM machines using such a method.

The first incident was reported in Batu Pahat, Johor at about 9.48am yesterday where the gang managed to withdraw RM265,000 through a series of withdrawals after it managed to hack into the ATM system.

The gang left behind only RM5,103 in the machine.

Their actions were recorded on closed circuit television cameras (CCTV).

It is believed that the software used by the gang, coupled with the "altered" mobile SIM card, had allowed them to override the withdrawal limit, which is usually set at a maximum of RM10,000 per account.

Police said two more incidents occurred in Selangor, specifically Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya about eight hours later.

The criminals, believed to be from the same gang which had struck in Johor, made off with about RM610,000 using the same modus operandi.

Subang Jaya police chief assistant commissioner of police Yahya Ramli told Bernama that in the incident, the men withdrew money from two ATMs hundreds of times in one day.

He said the case is now being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Computer Criminal Act 1997.
“This is the first time such a modus operandi has been used. The suspects hacked into the ATM system to get to the money without having to break open the machine,” he added, according to Bernama.

The suspects were believed to have made 137 withdrawals at around 5.30pm in Subang Jaya yesterday.
The bank management only realised that something was not right when they conducted a check on the particular ATMs.

The same thing also happened at two ATMs in Petaling Jaya at about the same time yesterday.

Petaling Jaya police chief assistant commissioner Azmi Abu Kassim said CCTV checks showed the suspects had opened the top of the two ATMs and had inserted something in it at midnight.

A total of RM303,000 was missing from the affected ATMs. – September 28, 2014.

MCA has criticised the Penang police over its unnecessary investigation into a case involving a Form Five student under the Sedition Act.

Calling it totally ridiculous, the party’s Religious Harmony Bureau chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker said the public expected the police to investigate the teachers involved in publicising the incident for inciting physical violence against the student as this could have led to murder, disfigurement and injuries.

“While the bureau notes that the Penang Education Department has taken measures to give a warning to the teachers who had implored that the teenager, who had accidentally clicked ‘like’ on the ‘I love Israel’ Facebook page, be burnt alive, we are taken aback that police have questioned the student under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Sedition Act.

“This investigation is totally ridiculous, more so coming from the police in Penang, which has a Jewish cemetery believed to be the oldest in Asia. It will further erode the image of the authorities among the public,” he said in a statement today.

Ti said that the sedition probe against the 17-year-old begs the question if any entity, be it tangible or intangible with the word “Israel” in it, will be deemed seditious.

“For example, will those, including children carollers, singing the chorus for the Christmas carol The First Noel, which ends with Born is the King of Israel, also be subject to questioning under the Sedition Act?

“Will radio and television channels broadcasting The First Noel in its programmes or movie channels also be probed for sedition?”

Ti said such action by the police against a top scholar only added to the victimisation of the student and the perception, whether real or imagined, by non-Muslims regarding selective persecution of religious minorities.

He also expressed concern over the earlier report by The Rakyat Post where schoolmates of the teenager were reported to be bullying and spitting at him in school while another student was beaten up over a mistaken identity.

“MCA’s fears that the teachers’ call to burn the boy will lead to victimisation appear to be coming true.”

He said the authorities should instead focus on never instigating violence and harassment.

He said while MCA wholeheartedly opposed the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime against Palestinian Muslims and Christians on the Gaza Strip, it urged the authorities and educators to practise common sense and not misuse the boycott call against McDonald’s and Starbucks and resort to vigilantism..

The Aug 10 incident led a teacher to screen capture and upload the image depicting the boy’s liking of an “I love Israel” page without the boy’s consent.

Two other teachers commented, calling for a boycott over the student, with one suggesting to burn the boy alive.

NIBONG TEBAL, Aug 13 — A Form Five student who was threatened with immolation for allegedly liking an “I love Israel” Facebook page is now under investigation for sedition.

The 17-year-old who sought police aid two days ago  was called in for questioning today by the South Seberang Perai police.

“We are investigating him under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Sedition Act,” Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi told reporters at the South Seberang Perai district police headquarters Hari Raya open house here.

“In his statement, he claimed that he had accidentally clicked ‘like’ on the page,” he said, referring to the teen’s recorded statement.

Abdul Rahim added that the police had questioned yesterday a teacher from the same school as the student who had allegedly linked the teen to the “I love Israel” Facebook page.

The sedition law prescribes a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a jail sentence of three years for a convicted first-time offender, or both, and raises the jail term to five years for subsequent offences.

The fifth former filed a police report after a teacher from his school allegedly circulated a screen captured image of the controversial post, which prompted attacks from other Facebook users to cut off ties with the student and to “boycott”.

Another teacher purportedly from the same school, went a step further, leaving on the first teacher’s Facebook page that is accessible only to friends a message that read: “Kita bakor je hahaha [We just burn hahaha]”.

South Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Shafein Mamat said more teachers and students from the boy’s school will be called to give their statements.

“We are investigating both aspects, one of him liking the controversial page and another on the threats against him,” Shafein said.

The student has since deactivated his Facebook account.

Family of Estonian model alerted to death through Facebook

Soosalu was found dead on July 1 on Rawa Island where she was staying with her partner. Soosalu’s younger brother Aivar Raidla told Malay Mail he learned about her death when he saw a Facebook posting which read: “Rest In Peace Regina.” The shocked Raidla then saw another posting by Soosalu’s partner which read: “I am deeply saddened and totally heartbroken to confirm the worst tragedy of my life. Regina my love has passed away on July 1, in the holy month of Ramadan.” It was earlier reported that her death was not made public because certain quarters wanted the family to know first. However, the family was never informed until they came across the posting. Soosalu’s close friend was reported to have said that Raidla had asked around for her partner’s contact number and managed to get him to confirm the death. Raidla, however, said an Estonian diplomat in Malaysia had been helping the family since the news broke. “The diplomat was on the way back to Malaysia in Sunday, he had a meeting there and started working on my sister’s case a day after he found out about her death on July 6.” Raidla said apart from the consulate, his sister’s friends had also been helpful in assisting the family. Wanita jelita ini akan sentiasa menjadi inspirasi dalam kehidupannya biarpun wanita itu sudah tiada. Setakat ini pihak polis telah menahan enam individu yang dipercayai terlibat dalam kes ini untuk membantu siasatan lanjutan. Mayat wanita itu dibedah siasat di Hospital Sultan Aminah dan pihak polis telah menghubungi pihak Interpol untuk memaklumkan kejadian ini. Keluarga mangsa juga difahamkan sudah dimaklumkan mengenai kejadian ini menerusi Kedutaan Estonia di Beijing, China.

The authorities have identified several individuals who might have leaked inside information concerning the security forces following several cases of abductions in the waters off the east coast of Sabah lately.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, however, further investigation was still going on to gather concrete evidence before they were detained.

"We are still investigating and we are rather 'uncomfortable' with several individuals. I cannot accuse anyone yet because we need to get concrete proof to detain the personalities whom we suspect.

"As you all know my stand, we will not compromise on any act of leaking inside information to the enemy," he told reporters here after opening 'Restoran Hyderabad' that serves Indian food, here last night.

Zahid was asked to comment on the involvement of 'insiders' in the attempt to kidnap the owner of a fish breeding centre in Kampung Bangau-Bangau, Semporna by seven men early yesterday morning.

The media earlier reported on the possibility that a group of criminals involved in several kidnapping cases had received information from inside sources regarding security patrols in the waters of the eastern coast of Sabah to launch their criminal activities there.

Commenting further, Zahid confirmed that the latest incident involved criminals from southern Philippines.

"I mentioned the country because we have concrete proof that could link the suspects as having originated from southern Philippines," he said.

Ahmad Zahid also described the success in preventing the abduction because of the continued efforts by the Royal Malaysia Police in coordinating operations in the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom).

In the latest incident, seven masked men armed with a pistol and parang intruded into the fish breeding centre to kidnap the owner but it was in vain as the owner had spent the night in Semporna town on the instruction of the authorities. – Bernama, July 8, 2014
