Sydney gunman entered Australia via Malaysia, Iran police reveal

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 — Iranian gunman Man Haron Monis who kept Sydney gripped in a deadly hostage crisis had fled to Malaysia after committing “violent” crimes in Iran before seeking asylum in Australia, according to the Middle Eastern nation’s police.

Monis, who was shot dead by Australian police after holding 17 people hostage in a Sydney cafe, had absconded to Malaysia in 1996 during a time when he was wanted for those and fraud-related crimes.

Aside from his alleged crimes in Iran, Monis was also facing trial in Australia for a number of offences, including being accessory to the murder of his wife as well as over 40 sexual assault charges involving seven alleged victims.

It is unclear when the Iranian left Malaysia for Australia, where he was granted refugee status in 2001.

Iranian police chief General Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam also revealed that Australia had declined Iran’s request to extradite Monis to stand trial for his crimes.

Moghaddam also alleged that Monis had sought asylum by masquerading as a Muslim cleric.

“It lasted four years to collect evidence on Manteqi’s [Monis’] identification documents and we reported this to the Australian police but since Australia has no extradition treaty with Iran, they didn’t extradite him,” Moghaddam was quoted as saying in a report by the Mehr News Agency.

Monis’ refugee status also precluded Australia from repatriating him to Iran.

Malaysia is a popular transit point for Iranians seeking to escape the Middle Eastern regime, owing to shared religious and cultural links between the two nations.

According to the Iranian embassy in 2011, there were over 70,000 of the country’s citizens residing in Malaysia, while an estimated 130,000 of its tourists arrive here annually.

The use of Malaysia as a jump-off point by Iranians was also illustrated during the disappearance of Flight MH370 in March, when two Iranians travelling on stolen passports initially triggered suspicions that the Malaysia Airlines plane had fallen victim to a terrorist attack.

The two men were later revealed to be travelling to Europe where they had hoped to seek asylum.

M'sians join IS due to poor religious education

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Negara was told today that poor religious education led to a handful of Malaysians to leave the country and join the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the militant group misinterpreted Islamic teachings, especially the concept of jihad, the cleansing of sins and an easy route to heaven, to draw followers.

“These people believe that only the IS militant group is capable of establishing an Islamic state in the radical mould,” he said replying to a question by Senator Lim Nget Yoon who asked for reasons why some Malaysians left to join the terrorist group.

Wan Junaidi said their hatred for western countries also encouraged this group to oppose the superpowers who were considered the enemies of Islam.

“This group also claimed that international Islamic organisations have failed to protect Muslim countries who are oppressed. This spurred them to fight for the terrorist group,” he added.

Replying to a supplementary question from Senator Johari Mat, he said a committee at ministry level should be formed to curb the spread of the extreme ideology.

“I feel there is a need for a committee at ministerial level to discuss the matter with the state religious authorities.”

Wan Junaidi said if the ideology was not curbed, more Malaysians would be encouraged to join the religious extremists, thus distorting their faith.

Police say IS recruiting our school kids now

A link shared at J.I.M Facebook Page on October 13, 2014 at 04:04PM via IFTTT:

KUALA LUMPUR: The effort to recruit Malaysian girls to join militant groups in the name of jihad, is taking an aggressive turn with school children being targeted in the recruitment drive.

Principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division of the Special Branch at Bukit Aman, SAC Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay, in revealing this said, the individual concerned was actively recruiting this group via Facebook as they were young and easily misled.

“The trend to recruit youngsters between the ages of 15 and 30 through Facebook is worrying. We are aware that some secondary school students have jihadist tendencies and have been persuaded through Facebook.

“Besides school children, students of private and public higher learning institutions with family and educational problems, government and private sector employees and businessmen are also being coaxed to strive together and fight for jihad,” he said when contacted by Bernama here Monday.

Ayob Khan said the three militant groups with Malaysian participation in Syria were the Islamic State (IS), Jabhat Al Nusra and Ajnad Al Sham.

He said that the targeted groups were usually taken in by verses from the holy Quran and fighting alongside the mujahideen.

“At times only part of the Quranic verses are used or verses are misinterpreted to make their objectives legitimate,” he said.

In that context, Ayob Khan said it was now appropriate for religious authorities to take proactive measures in dealing with this matter and ward off these militant groups’ propaganda at once.

In this regard, he said that religious authorities should issue an official fatwa as carried out by several Arab countries including Saudi Arabia which had banned its citizens from helping jihadist fighters in battlefields of other countries especially Syria, as a measure to curb militant recruitment.

“Controlling militant ideology and its breeding is the role of the religious authorities. The police will take action if there is evidence and basis of individuals planning acts of violence,” he said.

Ayob Khan said all parties, especially parents, teachers and employers should be aware of recruitment activities and inform the police should they come across anyone with tendencies to be jihadist fighters in war-torn countries.

He said should the police be informed at an early stage, they would arrange for counseling sessions with religious experts from the Royal Malaysia Police for the individuals involved.

So far 22 Malaysians including three women have been detected to be with militant groups in Syria and 23 others have been detained in the country for alleged links with these groups.
