Malaysian Christians protest burning of Al-Quran

9 September 2010

Representatives of the Youth Wing of the Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM Youth) handed a memorandum of protest to the United States Embassy today calling on the US government to stop a church in Florida from burning the Quran this 11 Sept 2010.

The group of five people were led by Bangsar Lutheran Church pastor Rev. Sivin Kit, and CCM Youth Moderator and Executive Council member Chrisanne Chin, who handed the memorandum to Jeremy Nathan, the Deputy Political Counselor of the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

CCM Youth is strongly against threats by Dr Terry Jones of The Dove World Outreach Centre, a small congregation of 50 people in Gainesville, Florida, to burn the Muslim holy text, the Quran, on the anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, condemning attempts to ban or burn another faith’s holy text as tantamount to a form of hate crime that must be dealt with utmost severity.

CCM Youth reiterates that The Dove World Outreach Center’s intentions do not represent the sentiments of Christians in Malaysia, and considers the act of burning the holy scriptures of any faith a disrespectful, provocative, insulting and harmful act that is contrary to the fundamental Christian belief to love our neighbours as ourselves and to be peacemakers.

I believe Lim Guan Eng recently released a statement in the same spirit, condemning this extremely disrespectful act.

I have often said that our hope for Malaysia lies in the day when different communities speak up for one another, not just for “their own people” – when Muslims speak up for Christians (like when churches were being fire-bombed), or when Indians speak up for Malays.

Anyway, thanks CCM Youth for a heartwarming tale going into the joyous month of Syawal :)

Islamic State killed 700 people from Syrian tribe in 2 weeks

http://www.therakyatpost.com/world/2014/08/17/islamic-state-killed-700-people-syrian-tribe-2-weeks/

BEIRUT, Aug 17, 2014:

The Islamic State militant group has executed 700 members of a tribe it has been battling in eastern Syria during the past two weeks, the majority of them civilians, a human rights monitoring group and activists said on Saturday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has tracked violence on all sides of the three-year-old conflict, said reliable sources reported beheadings were used to execute many of the al-Sheitaat tribe, which is from Deir al-Zor province.

The conflict between Islamic State and the al-Sheitaat tribe, who number about 70,000, flared after the militants took over two oil fields in July.

“Those who were executed are all al-Sheitaat,” Observatory director Rami Abdelrahman said by telephone from Britain.
“Some were arrested, judged and killed.”

Reuters cannot independently verify reports from Syria due to security conditions and reporting restrictions.

Proclaiming a ‘caliphate’ straddling parts of Iraq and Syria, Islamic State has swept across northern Iraq in recent weeks, pushing back Kurdish regional forces and driving tens of thousands of Muslims, Christians and members of the Yazidi religious minority from their homes, prompting the first United States air strikes in Iraq since the withdrawal of American troops in 2011.

The insurgents are also tightening their grip in Syria, of which they now control roughly a third, mostly rural areas in the north and east.

An activist in Deir al-Zor who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters that 300 men were executed in one day in the town of Ghraneij, one of the three main towns of the al-Sheitaat tribal heartland, when Islamic State stormed the town earlier this week.

Another opposition activist from Deir al-Zor said residents of al-Sheitaat towns had been given three days to leave.

“Those who were executed during the storming of the al-Sheitaat area are around 300. The rest were killed in the course of the battles,” he told Reuters on condition of anonymity to protect his identity.

Civilians fleeing al-Sheitaat towns had either taken sanctuary in other villages or travelled to Iraq, he said.

More than 170,000 people have been killed in Syria’s civil war, which pits overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim rebels against President Bashar al-Assad, a member of the Shia-derived Alawite minority, backed by Shia militias from Iraq and Lebanon.

The insurgency is split between competing factions in Syria, with Islamic State emerging as the most powerful.

Tribal powers in Syria and Iraq have had to make the choice between fighting Islamic State or pledging allegiance.

On Friday, a video posted on YouTube showed men who said they were from the al-Sheitaat towns of Kishkeih and Abu Hammam pledging full support for Islamic State.

“We say that what Islamic State stands for is justice,” a tribal member sitting in a room with dozens of other men said in a statement that was read out.

The head of the al-Sheitaat tribe, Sheikh Rafaa Aakla al-Raju, called in a video message for other tribes to join them in the fight against the militants.

“We appeal to the other tribes to stand by us because it will be their turn next … If (Islamic State) are done with us the other tribes will be targeted after al-Sheitaat.

“They are the next target,” he said in the video, posted on YouTube.

Islamic State was condemned on Friday in a United Nations Security Council resolution for “gross, systematic and widespread abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law”.

Police, teachers overreacted over Israel 'like' - The Rakyat Post

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15, 2014:

Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) is appalled that a mere Facebook “like” has led police to investigate a 17-year-old student under the Sedition Act.

Its chairman Tan Sri Hasmy Agam, in a press statement today, also blasted the teacher from a school in Penang, who on Aug 10 had taken a screenshot of the boy for ‘liking’ a pro-Israeli Facebook page and uploading it onto the social media without his permission.

This led to threats being issued against the student.

“Suhakam is of the view that the reported sedition probe into the student is an overreaction on the part of the police.
“It is unfortunate to note that the teachers concerned had failed to handle the matter responsibly as educators and instead, created a situation that has violated the basic rights of the student, contrary to the spirit and articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Malaysia is a State Party.”

Hasmy said this particular case was an example of how the act could be misused as the matter could be resolved through other approaches.

He went on to call upon all relevant authorities to weigh their actions accordingly and to use their discretion appropriately in the handling of matters that concerned the social media and the expression of various views and opinions.
Hasmy then urged the Education Ministry to incorporate human rights as part of the school curriculum to better promote respect, understanding and acceptance of the basic rights of all citizens, including those of students.

“We also urge all parties to practice restraint and not to partake in any actions that promote ignorance and hatred,” he said, adding that Malaysians should instead strive to exercise respect and tolerance for one another.

Earlier today, Penang police chief Datuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi confirmed that the teenager was being probed under Section 41 (1)(c) of the Sedition Act, and not the case as reported yesterday.

Last week, the Form Five student lodged a police report that his life was threatened by teachers and students of his school for having ‘liked’ the page.

The student had also claimed that a female teacher had cut and paste a screenshot of his ‘liking’ on her Facebook account and ridiculed him, leading to one teacher to suggest, albeit jokingly, to burn the student alive.

The “moderates” strike again:
Penang teen who ‘liked’ ‘I love Israel’ Facebook page under sedition probe
By Opalyn Mok, Malay Online, August 13, 2014
NIBONG TEBAL, Aug 13 — A Form Five student who was threatened with immolation for allegedly liking an “I love Israel” Facebook page is now under investigation for sedition.
The 17-year-old who sought police aid two days ago was called in for questioning today by the South Seberang Perai police.
“We are investigating him under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Sedition Act,” Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi told reporters at the South Seberang Perai district police headquarters Hari Raya open house here.
“In his statement, he claimed that he had accidentally clicked ‘like’ on the page,” he said, referring to the teen’s recorded statement.
Abdul Rahim added that the police had questioned yesterday a teacher from the same school as the student who had allegedly linked the teen to the “I love Israel” Facebook page.
The sedition law prescribes a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a jail sentence of three years for a convicted first-time offender, or both, and raises the jail term to five years for subsequent offences.
The fifth former filed a police report after a teacher from his school allegedly circulated a screen captured image of the controversial post, which prompted attacks from other Facebook users to cut off ties with the student and to “boycott”.
Another teacher purportedly from the same school, went a step further, leaving on the first teacher’s Facebook page that is accessible only to friends a message that read: “Kita bakor je hahaha [We just burn hahaha]”.
South Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Shafein Mamat said more teachers and students from the boy’s school will be called to give their statements.
“We are investigating both aspects, one of him liking the controversial page and another on the threats against him,” Shafein said.

MCA: Police probe into sedition case of teen is ridiculous
http://www.therakyatpost.com/news/2014/08/14/mca-police-probe-sedition-case-teen-ridiculous/

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14, 2014:

MCA has criticised the Penang police over its unnecessary investigation into a case involving a Form Five student under the Sedition Act.

Calling it totally ridiculous, the party’s Religious Harmony Bureau chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker said the public expected the police to investigate the teachers involved in publicising the incident for inciting physical violence against the student as this could have led to murder, disfigurement and injuries.

“While the bureau notes that the Penang Education Department has taken measures to give a warning to the teachers who had implored that the teenager, who had accidentally clicked ‘like’ on the ‘I love Israel’ Facebook page, be burnt alive, we are taken aback that police have questioned the student under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Sedition Act.

“This investigation is totally ridiculous, more so coming from the police in Penang, which has a Jewish cemetery believed to be the oldest in Asia. It will further erode the image of the authorities among the public,” he said in a statement today.

Ti said that the sedition probe against the 17-year-old begs the question if any entity, be it tangible or intangible with the word “Israel” in it, will be deemed seditious.

“For example, will those, including children carollers, singing the chorus for the Christmas carol The First Noel, which ends with Born is the King of Israel, also be subject to questioning under the Sedition Act?

“Will radio and television channels broadcasting The First Noel in its programmes or movie channels also be probed for sedition?”

Ti said such action by the police against a top scholar only added to the victimisation of the student and the perception, whether real or imagined, by non-Muslims regarding selective persecution of religious minorities.

He also expressed concern over the earlier report by The Rakyat Post where schoolmates of the teenager were reported to be bullying and spitting at him in school while another student was beaten up over a mistaken identity.

“MCA’s fears that the teachers’ call to burn the boy will lead to victimisation appear to be coming true.”

He said the authorities should instead focus on never instigating violence and harassment.

He said while MCA wholeheartedly opposed the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime against Palestinian Muslims and Christians on the Gaza Strip, it urged the authorities and educators to practise common sense and not misuse the boycott call against McDonald’s and Starbucks and resort to vigilantism..

The Aug 10 incident led a teacher to screen capture and upload the image depicting the boy’s liking of an “I love Israel” page without the boy’s consent.

Two other teachers commented, calling for a boycott over the student, with one suggesting to burn the boy alive.
