Indonesia jails ex-top judge for life for corruption - The Malaysian Insider

http://ift.tt/Typntm The former top judge of Indonesia's constitutional court was jailed for life yesterday for accepting more than US$5 million (RM16.05 million) in bribes to influence rulings, in the country's latest high-profile corruption case. A judge in Jakarta handed down the unusually tough sentence, and said that by accepting kickbacks to sway decisions on local election disputes, Akil Mochtar had severely damaged the constitutional court's standing. "The defendant was the chairman of a high-level state institution that was the last bastion for people seeking justice," presiding judge Suwidya told a special anti-corruption court. "His actions have resulted in the collapse of the authority of the constitutional court." Mochtar, 53, described the sentence as "unfair" and said he would appeal. He was caught red-handed in October in a sting by anti-corruption investigators as he was about to accept around three billion rupiah (RM802,750) in bribes from a businessman and a lawmaker, according to prosecutors. He is the latest in a series of top public servants to become embroiled in a corruption case, with the former top energy regulator and several government ministers among those accused of graft. However his case was the most shocking in recent times, as the constitutional court had been considered one of the country's cleanest institutions. After a lengthy final hearing yesterday that ran into the night, judge Suwidya announced that Mochtar had been "proven legally and convincingly guilty" of corruption and money-laundering and handed him a life sentence. He had accepted around US$5.4 million in bribes in cases linked to regional election disputes, according to prosecutors. One of the key roles of the constitutional court, created in 2001, is to decide on disputes in local and national elections. But following the Mochtar scandal, the court ruled that it should no longer have responsibility for deciding local poll disputes, although it will continue to decide on such cases until the government has issued a new law. The court also hears cases about the constitution and rules on any attempt to impeach the president. Indonesia is consistently ranked one of the world's most corrupt countries. NGO Transparency International ranked Indonesia 114th out of 177 countries and territories in its annual corruption perceptions index last year. Rela member, navy man arrested in latest counter terrorism move by police

http://ift.tt/1pB1Dns Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar in a statement today said the Rela member, aged 46, was arrested on June 25 in Kuala Kangsar. Police seized a home-made rifle and 433 live bullets from him. Khalid said police suspected that the Rela member aided the militant group which underwent combat training at Gunung Ara Para, Kampung Nyior Ketior in December last year by producing and supplying home-made rifles to them. On the navy officer, Khalid said, the 29-year-old was detained yesterday for helping a member of a militant group based in southern Philippines to get into Sabah. He was believed to help the suspect to enter the country illegally on June 11. A police source said the two suspects detained belonged to the same cell which had been linked earlier to a rebel group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the Middle East and the Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippines. The IGP's statement also said that police raided a "safe house" in Shah Alam today. The property was allegedly used as a meeting point by the militant group's members. The latest arrests brings the number of those arrested from the group to 19. On June 18, police arrested a suspected weapons handler for the group which had been planning to carry out suicide bombings and attacks in Syria and Iraq. Bukit Aman’s Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division arrested the 25-year-old man in an operation at a house in Kampung Kelebor, Kuala Kangsar, at about 2pm. They seized a home-made rifle and 48 bullets from the man. The police team previously arrested 15 people linked to ISIS. The weapon seized was believed to be used by the militant group for training purposes. Initial investigations revealed that the militant group was training their members at Gunung Arang Para in Kampung Nyior Ketior, Kuala Kangsar. All suspects are currently detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012. It is learnt that the grounds at Gunung Arang Para was used for two days last December by at least 10 militant members for weapons training. Other than Kuala Kangsar, the group also used a training site in Port Dickson. The more militant groups are discovered all over the country, the higher the probability that there could be more training sites yet to be uncovered by the authorities. It is learnt that the militants also trained in southern Philippines and made their way to Sabah and later planned to fly to Syria and Iraq, where ISIS was carrying out persistent attacks to topple the existing regimes. The militant group’s plan was to go to Syria and launch attacks before heading to Iraq for their “end game”. The Counter Terrorism Division has been rounding up members of the militant group since April 28.

Pontian: Seorang remaja perempuan berusia 13 tahun menjadi mangsa rogol seorang anggota tentera manakala rakan lelakinya berusia 16 tahun disamun dalam kejadian di tepi pantai berhampiran Pontian Besar di sini, Selasa lalu.

Dalam kejadian kira-kira jam 10 pagi itu, mangsa bersama rakannya dikatakan bersiar-siar di tepi pantai sebelum ditahan sekumpulan enam lelaki berpakaian seragam tentera dan menuduh pasangan itu melakukan perkara tidak baik.

Remaja perempuan itu dikatakan menafikan perkara itu sebelum diarah melakukan hubungan seks dengan seorang daripada suspek.

Keengganan remaja berkenaan berbuat demikian menyebabkannya dirogol suspek berkenaan.

Difahamkan, seorang rakan suspek memaksa remaja perempuan itu melakukan seks oral manakala telefon bimbit rakan lelakinya turut disamun.

Kedua-dua remaja itu dilepaskan kira-kira sejam selepas itu manakala suspek dikatakan berada bawah pengaruh dadah ketika melakukan jenayah itu.

Ketua Polis Johor, Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, mengesahkan penahanan enam lelaki bagi membantu siasatan.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin hari ini menyokong usaha polis mengambil tindakan terhadap seorang anggota tentera yang terlibat kegiatan militan.

Timbalan Perdana Menteri itu berkata, tindakan pantas polis mampu mencegah insiden berdarah pencerobohan Lahad Datu berulang dan oleh itu ia sangat dialu-alukan.

"Saya sokong usaha yang diambil pihak berkuasa terutamanya polis kerana peristiwa yang berlaku di Lahad Datu ini sesuatu yang menggemparkan dan tidak boleh diizinkan.

"Apa lagi kalau bentuk keganasan. Kita tidak akan bertolak ansur. Jika polis menyiasat dan ambil tindakan. Kita serah kepada mereka untuk menghakimkan kes sebegitu.
"Saya tak kira siapa walaupun pegawai kerajaan. Asalkan ada bukti kukuh mereka terlibat dalam kegiatan (militan) dan ada asas untuk dikemukakan ke mahkamah," katanya selepas merasmikan Karnival Amal di Bukit Damansara, hari ini.

Semalam, Timbalan Ketua Polis Negara, Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin berkata seorang anggota Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (TLDM) adalah antara tiga rakyat tempatan ditahan polis di Sandakan kerana disyaki terbabit dalam kegiatan militan.

Katanya, suspek berusia antara 29 dan 31 tahun, ditahan dalam operasi khas yang dijalankan Bahagian Pencegahan Keganasan, Cawangan Khas, Bukit Aman.

Beliau berkata, seorang daripada individu yang ditangkap merupakan anggota kanan sel militan yang disyaki menjalankan latihan ketenteraan di kem milik Kumpulan Abu Sayyaf di Selatan Filipina, sejak 22 April lalu. – 14 Jun, 2014.
