Brewery, discos, pubs, Putrajaya… cops unveil militants’ hit list - The Malaysian Insider

A link shared at J.I.M Facebook Page on August 17, 2014 at 04:40AM via IFTTT:

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/brewery-discos-pubs-putrajaya-cops-unveil-militants-hit-list

Police today revealed that Malaysian militants arrested earlier this year were planning to attack several pubs, discos and even the Carlsberg brewery in Shah Alam.

Federal Special Branch principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Pitchay Mydin said the militants were supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).

"The suspects admitted that they wanted to overthrow what they perceived to be an un-Islamic government in Putrajaya," Ayob told The Malaysian Insider today.

"Besides planning attacks on pubs and discotheques, the suspects were also targeting the Carlsberg brewery.
"One of their main objectives was to target Putrajaya," Ayob said, referring to the 19 extremists whom police picked up between January and June.

"Based on our investigations, the suspects had raised tens of thousands of ringgit from their fundraising activities."

Ayob also said that between 20 and 30 Malaysians have gone to Syria to fight with Isis, although figures could be higher.

"What we have detected so far is that figure but police believe the figure could be a lot higher than that."

Malaysian factory worker, Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki, died as a suicide bomber in May, and Ayob revealed that another Malaysian is believed to have died as well.

"I cannot reveal the details yet as we are trying to confirm the identity of a second Malaysian who is believed to have perished in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East."

But, Ayob said the activities of the Malaysian militants arrested thus far were merely in the planning stage.

"We are constantly monitoring the activities of suspected militants and their accomplices," he said, declining to elaborate further.

Police in June arrested three men in Sandakan, Sabah, who were allegedly militants.

One of the suspects had received training by the Abu Sayyaf Group in the southern Philippines, while another was a Royal Malaysian Navy personnel.

The three suspects had links with 11 people who had been arrested by police in April for involvement in militant activities.

The militants' main purpose was to send fighters to Syria after they had been given training, police revealed.

Isis fighters have successfully cut a bloody swathe across Iraq, overrunning large areas of the country and also conquering a substantial part of the northern region. – August 15, 2014.

Abducted constable cries while speaking to his wife - The Rakyat Post

KOTA KINABALU, July 21:

It just broke Syarifah Erna Berson’s heart to hear her husband, Constable Zakiah Aleip, cry when he called recently. “He is a very strong man and to hear him cry just breaks my heart,” said the 23-year-old, describing Zakiah, who was kidnapped by a group of eight heavily armed men from southern Philippines at the Mabul Water Bungalow Resort on July 12.

Syarifah said when she first received his calls, just a couple of days after his abduction, she dared not call him back.

“The second time he called, we spoke for about two to three minutes. He cried and told me he missed our son and family.

“He also told me he was worried about our well being. I had to be strong and told him that we are doing fine, and told him to take care and stay healthy,” she said, when met after receiving assistance from the police during the launch of the Op Selamat campaign at the Segama Waterfront here today. The couple have a four-month-old son, Muhammad Hisham Izzuddin. Expressing her worries about his safety, deep down she believed he is safe.

“He told me that he hoped he would be reunited with us before Hari Raya, so we can celebrate the festival as a family as planned.” Sharifah said she prayed day and night for her husband’s safe return, adding that her parents-in-law had been very helpful and understanding.

“We confided in each other, and although they put up a strong front, I know they are hurting inside. They are very worried of their son’s safety,” she said.

Zakiah was kidnapped by the gunmen, while his colleague Corporal Ab Rajah Jamuan was killed in the 11am incident. Meanwhile, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said they were working hard to ensure Zakiah was released before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“The police and leaders are in the middle of negotiating for his release, and we hope it can happen soon,” he said, declining to elaborate in the matter.

“Outsiders have no right to ask for information on the matter and I don’t have the right to share it either. All that matters is that he is safe and well up to now." He said the kidnappers had been in contact with Zakiah’s wife as well as police officials. Read more: http://ift.tt/WtB071

Probe into leaked info on possible Sabah attack by armed men - The Rakyat Post

KOTA KINABALU, July 17:

Police are investigating a message, supposedly confidential and believed to be from the police, on a possible attack by a group of gunmen in the east coast of Sabah.

The message has gone viral on social media.

“We are investigating whether it is a rumour or not, but whatever it is, I am attending a meeting in Semporna today to discuss all aspects, particularly security issues,” said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman.

He, however, assured that the state was safe and urged people to stop spreading rumours as it would only create panic.

“Our security forces are ready and able to control and handle any challenges that may happen.”

He said this when met after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman presented the state government’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri goodies to eight security agencies at the Tun Ahmad Raffae auditorium at the Tun Mustapha Tower here.

Rumours are circulating that a large group of armed men, wearing black shirts and fatigues, are just waiting for the right time to head to Sabah waters on high-speed boats, to attack Lahad Datu and Semporna.

The message stated that 45 people on six high-speed boats had docked at the Bakungan Besar, near the Selingan Island in Sandakan, and urged all security officers and personnel to be on alert at all times.

Jalaluddin declined to comment on a curfew which is expected to be imposed in four districts — Semporna, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Sandakan.

He said any announcement on this would be made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak tomorrow.

“Whatever the announcement may be, I would like to assure the people of Sabah that the police are ready.”

The curfew was announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi after a meeting with several ministries and government agencies in Bukit Aman.

He had stressed that it was meant to beef up security in the east coast of Sabah.

Kidnappers demand ‘10 million’ for policeman’s release, says report

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/kidnappers-demand-10-million-for-policemans-release-says-report

The kidnappers holding a marine policeman abducted from Mabul Island in Sabah last Saturday have demanded a '10 million' ransom, although no currency was stated, the New Straits Times reported today.

It said a day after the incident, the kidnappers made a brief call at 10.50pm, ending it by saying, "I demand 10 million".

However, they did not say if the figure was in exchange for Constable Zakiah Alep's release.

Quoting sources, the NST said the call was made to the Semporna marine police headquarters’ operations centre, and Zakiah was the first to speak.

An inspector who answered the call was told that the kidnappers wanted nothing less than "10 million", without stating the currency.

The call then ended but sources told the NST that Zakiah was well and not mistreated.

“There have been several calls from Zakiah, including from his own phone to his wife, as well as the marine police operations centre. There was also a call made on Monday at 10pm from a foreign-registered number.

“We believe this was also his captors telling us that Zakiah had not been harmed, so that they will get what they want,” a source close to the ongoing investigations told the daily.

Zakiah was abducted on July 12 by gunmen who came in two speedboats fitted with additional outboard engines, while his colleague Corporal Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was shot dead in an ambush at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort.

Rajah is expected to be given a posthumous promotion to sergeant, according to the NST.

Intelligence sources told the daily that they believed the gunmen had wanted to capture policemen on duty and had been observing their duty roster.

“They came straight for them. There was a Chinese tourist from the United Kingdom whom they had by the arm, but they let him get away," the source was quoted as saying. – July 17, 2014.

Suspects leaking inside information on Sabah abductions identified, says Zahid – Bernama

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/suspects-leaking-inside-information-on-sabah-abductions-identified-says-zah

The authorities have identified several individuals who might have leaked inside information concerning the security forces following several cases of abductions in the waters off the east coast of Sabah lately.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, however, further investigation was still going on to gather concrete evidence before they were detained.

"We are still investigating and we are rather 'uncomfortable' with several individuals. I cannot accuse anyone yet because we need to get concrete proof to detain the personalities whom we suspect.

"As you all know my stand, we will not compromise on any act of leaking inside information to the enemy," he told reporters here after opening 'Restoran Hyderabad' that serves Indian food, here last night.

Zahid was asked to comment on the involvement of 'insiders' in the attempt to kidnap the owner of a fish breeding centre in Kampung Bangau-Bangau, Semporna by seven men early yesterday morning.

The media earlier reported on the possibility that a group of criminals involved in several kidnapping cases had received information from inside sources regarding security patrols in the waters of the eastern coast of Sabah to launch their criminal activities there.

Commenting further, Zahid confirmed that the latest incident involved criminals from southern Philippines.

"I mentioned the country because we have concrete proof that could link the suspects as having originated from southern Philippines," he said.

Ahmad Zahid also described the success in preventing the abduction because of the continued efforts by the Royal Malaysia Police in coordinating operations in the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom).

In the latest incident, seven masked men armed with a pistol and parang intruded into the fish breeding centre to kidnap the owner but it was in vain as the owner had spent the night in Semporna town on the instruction of the authorities. – Bernama, July 8, 2014

Culik: Suspek dipercayai bocor maklumat dalaman dikenal pasti - The Malaysian Insider

– Bernama, 8 Julai, 2014.

UM lecturer among 5 hunted by police for terrorism activities (TMI)

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/um-lecturer-among-5-hunted-by-police-for-terrorism-activities

A lecturer at Universiti Malaya's Academy of Islamic Studies is one of five people wanted by police for involvement in militant activities, according to a list uploaded on the police website today.

The 36-year-old man, identified as Dr Mahmud Ahmad, is a senior lecturer at the Department of Akidah and Islamic Thought, according to the university website.

He and four others are believed to have fled Malaysia and are in hiding in the southern Philippines.

In a statement, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said three of them were involved in recruiting and sending Malaysian recruits to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (Isil) fighters in Syria, while two were members of Darul Islam Sabah and had joined the Abu Sayyaf.

Sources familiar with the investigation said Mahmud is one of the three Isil recruiters.

“He (Mahmud) is still with the university but has been missing for the past two months,” said the source.

The lecturer, who is married, is also known by his other name, Abu Handzalah.

His last known address was in Batu Caves.

The other two are Mohd Najib Husen from Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, and Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee.

The 36-year-old Mohd Najib owned a photocopy and stationery shop in Universiti Malaya while Muhammad Joraimee, 39, from Batu Caves, is working with the Selayang Municipal Council.

Sources said Mahmud belonged to one of the Islamist groups in Malaysia linked to Isil.

The cell he belonged to was also linked to the group which conducted combat training for Malaysian militants at Gunung Arang Para, in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, in December last year.

Two more people being sought by the police are Mohd Amin Baco, 31, and Jeknal Adil, 30. Both are from Tawau, Sabah.

They are members of Darul Islam Sabah and both are said to have joined the Abu Sayyaf group based in the southern Philippines.

Militant groups in Malaysia are using isolated places, such as the areas around Gunung Arang Para, to hold combat training for Malaysian jihadist who are heading for Syria and Iraq to fight in the civil war.

At least 10 militant members underwent weapons training at the grounds of Gunung Arang Para for two days last December.

Other than Kuala Kangsar, the group also used a training site in Port Dickson.

As more militant groups are discovered in the country, authorities believed there could be more training sites yet to be uncovered.

It is learnt that the militants also trained in the southern Philippines and had made their way to Sabah. They planned to fly to Syria and Iraq, where Isil is carrying out sustained attacks to topple the existing regime.

The Counter Terrorism Division has been rounding up members of the militant group since April 28.

The suspects were detained in Selangor, Kedah, Perak and Sabah.

The latest arrests were made end of last month, involving a Rela member and a Navy personnel.

The Rela member, aged 46, was arrested on June 25 in Kuala Kangsar.

Police seized a home-made rifle and 433 live bullets from him.

Police believed there were more than 100 Malaysian militants in the Middle East fighting for Isil.

The number is based on intelligence reports which the Special Branch had received, a senior police officer from Bukit Aman told The Malaysian Insider. – July 2, 2014.

3 July 2014 - UM lecturer wanted for recruiting suicide bomber, say police
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/um-lecturer-wanted-for-recruiting-suicide-bomber-say-police

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philippine military kills wanted Jemaah Islamiyah, Abu Sayyaf operatives in airstrike

By Bill Roggio

February 2, 2012

The Philippine Air Force force killed a senior Jemaah Islamiyah leader, a top Abu Sayyaf Group commander, and 13 others, including a wanted Singaporean terrorist, during an airstrike in Sulu province.

Zulkifli bin Hir, one of the most wanted leaders of the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah; Umbra Jumdail, a senior Abu Sayyaf commander, and his son Teng; and Muhamad Ali, another wanted JI operative, were all killed in the early morning today in an airstrike, according to the country's top military commander.

Chief of Staff General Jessie Dellosa said the 3 a.m. airstrike targeted a camp in the village of Duyan Kabaw in Parang in the southern province of Sulu. Dellosa expressed certainty that the terrorist leaders had been killed even though the military was not in possession of the dead bodies.

"I am sure because I will not easily issue a statement here," he said, according to Inquirer News. "We have intelligence people and locals in the area."

A military spokesman said the strike, which was carried out by two OV-10 Broncos, light military attack aircraft used in counterinsurgency operations, was the result of months of intelligence gathering. Several 500-pound bombs were dropped on the terrorists' camp. No civilians were reported to have been killed in the strike.

The operation was "based on a thorough, well-executed plan and months of continuous monitoring and surveillance of JI and ASG personalities," Colonel Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr., a military spokesman, said during a briefing, Inquirer News reported. In early January, a senior general disclosed that the military was engaged in operations in Sulu hunting for Hir; Muhamad Ali; Qayim and Sa'ad, two Indonesians; and Amin Baco, who is thought to be a Malaysian national.

Although no US involvement in the strike has been reported, US Special Forces are based in the Philippines to aid the government and military in their fight against the al Qaeda-linked groups and to assist in humanitarian efforts. The Philippine constitution prohibits US troops from engaging in combat operations in the country.

Zulkifli bin Hir, a Malaysian national known as "Marwan," is wanted by the US government, which has a $5 million reward out for information leading to his capture. Hir is "an engineer trained in the United States" and "is believed to be the head of the Kumpulun Mujahidin Malaysia (KMM) terrorist organization and a member of Jemaah Islamiyah's central command," according to the US State Department's Rewards for Justice website. He is believed to have been sheltering in the Philippines since 2003 and has served as a bomb maker for the Abu Sayyaf Group.

Umbra Jumdail, a senior Abu Sayyaf Group commander who is also known as Doc Abu, is wanted by both the US government, which has offered a $140,000 reward for information leading to his capture, and the Philippine government. He has been involved in numerous kidnappings and assassinations.

Muhamad Ali, a Singaporean national also known as Mauwiya Anjala, is a Jemaah Islamiyah leader who is also wanted by the US, which has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

Jemaah Islamiyah is an Islamist terrorist group that seeks to establish a pan-Islamic state across Southeast Asia. Jemaah Islamiyah is most active in Indonesia and the Philippines, but also conducts operations in Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. The terror group is al Qaeda's regional affiliate in Southeast Asia and its operatives have been responsible for devastating attacks in the region, including the 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings, the 2004 suicide car bombing outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, the August 2003 car bombing of the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta, and a series of bombings in Manila.

The terror group has suffered major setbacks inside Indonesia, with many of its top leaders killed or captured over the past several years. Among them are Dulmatin, a top leader and military commander (killed in 2010); and Noordin Mohammed Top, a senior leader, recruiter, strategist, and fundraiser (killed in 2009). Umar Patek, a top JI leader, was captured in March 2010 in Abbottabad, Pakistan, just months before al Qaeda emir Osama bin Laden was killed in the same city in a US special operations raid. Abu Bakir Bashir, the terror group's founder, is currently in prison for founding, financing, and supporting al Qaeda in Aceh.

The Abu Sayyaf Group is a Philippines-based terrorist and criminal gang formed by fighters who returned from the Afghan jihad against the Soviet Union. The group was funded and financed by Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, one of Osama bin Laden's brother-in-laws, according to Khaddafy Janjalani, the leader of Abu Sayyaf before he was killed in 2006. Khalifa, an al Qaeda financier and facilitator, was killed by US special operations forces in Madagascar in 2006.

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/bahasa/article/ambil-tindakan-terhadap-penjawat-awam-jika-terlibat-militan-kata-muhyiddin

14 June 2014

"Apa lagi kalau bentuk keganasan.

– 14 Jun, 2014.
