Abducted constable cries while speaking to his wife - The Rakyat Post

It just broke Syarifah Erna Berson’s heart to hear her husband, Constable Zakiah Aleip, cry when he called recently. “He is a very strong man and to hear him cry just breaks my heart,” said the 23-year-old, describing Zakiah, who was kidnapped by a group of eight heavily armed men from southern Philippines at the Mabul Water Bungalow Resort on July 12.

Syarifah said when she first received his calls, just a couple of days after his abduction, she dared not call him back.

“The second time he called, we spoke for about two to three minutes. He cried and told me he missed our son and family.

“He also told me he was worried about our well being. I had to be strong and told him that we are doing fine, and told him to take care and stay healthy,” she said, when met after receiving assistance from the police during the launch of the Op Selamat campaign at the Segama Waterfront here today. The couple have a four-month-old son, Muhammad Hisham Izzuddin. Expressing her worries about his safety, deep down she believed he is safe.

“He told me that he hoped he would be reunited with us before Hari Raya, so we can celebrate the festival as a family as planned.” Sharifah said she prayed day and night for her husband’s safe return, adding that her parents-in-law had been very helpful and understanding.

“We confided in each other, and although they put up a strong front, I know they are hurting inside. They are very worried of their son’s safety,” she said.

Zakiah was kidnapped by the gunmen, while his colleague Corporal Ab Rajah Jamuan was killed in the 11am incident. Meanwhile, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said they were working hard to ensure Zakiah was released before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“The police and leaders are in the middle of negotiating for his release, and we hope it can happen soon,” he said, declining to elaborate in the matter.

“Outsiders have no right to ask for information on the matter and I don’t have the right to share it either. All that matters is that he is safe and well up to now." He said the kidnappers had been in contact with Zakiah’s wife as well as police officials. Read more: http://ift.tt/WtB071

Kidnappers demand ‘10 million’ for policeman’s release, says report

The kidnappers holding a marine policeman abducted from Mabul Island in Sabah last Saturday have demanded a '10 million' ransom, although no currency was stated, the New Straits Times reported today.

It said a day after the incident, the kidnappers made a brief call at 10.50pm, ending it by saying, "I demand 10 million".

However, they did not say if the figure was in exchange for Constable Zakiah Alep's release.

Quoting sources, the NST said the call was made to the Semporna marine police headquarters’ operations centre, and Zakiah was the first to speak.

An inspector who answered the call was told that the kidnappers wanted nothing less than "10 million", without stating the currency.

The call then ended but sources told the NST that Zakiah was well and not mistreated.

“There have been several calls from Zakiah, including from his own phone to his wife, as well as the marine police operations centre. There was also a call made on Monday at 10pm from a foreign-registered number.

“We believe this was also his captors telling us that Zakiah had not been harmed, so that they will get what they want,” a source close to the ongoing investigations told the daily.

Zakiah was abducted on July 12 by gunmen who came in two speedboats fitted with additional outboard engines, while his colleague Corporal Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was shot dead in an ambush at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort.

Rajah is expected to be given a posthumous promotion to sergeant, according to the NST.

Intelligence sources told the daily that they believed the gunmen had wanted to capture policemen on duty and had been observing their duty roster.

“They came straight for them. There was a Chinese tourist from the United Kingdom whom they had by the arm, but they let him get away," the source was quoted as saying. – July 17, 2014.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has named former Moro National Liberation Front leader Nur Misuari as the man behind the latest armed incursion in Mabul Island.

The Home Minister was quoted by English-language daily New Straits Times as saying that investigations showed the fugitive was using various mercenary groups to conduct operations in Sabah's eastern coast.

"We believe he has a bigger plan behind all this," Zahid was quoted as saying in the report in Kuching today.

Zahid said Putrajaya is working closely with its counterparts in Philippines to combat the kidnappings by Sulu terrorists in the islands off the coast of eastern Sabah.
In the latest incursion last Saturday night, a policeman was killed while another was kidnapped by gunmen dressed in military fatigue.

Corporal Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was shot dead in an ambush at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort while his colleague, Constable Zakiah Aleip, was kidnapped by eight gunmen.

The gunmen were reported to have fled to southern Philippines.

Three weeks ago, a fish farm operator in Kampung Air Sapang in Sabah's east coast town of Kunak was kidnapped by armed men believed to be Suluks.

In May, Chinese national Yang Zai Lin, 34, was abducted by five gunmen from a fish farm in Pulau Baik.

Yang was the manager of the fish farm owned by Wonderful Terrace Sdn Bhd, a Hong Kong-based company.

Despite engaging the police special action unit in a shootout, the gunmen managed to evade authorities and fled towards southern Philippines.

In another incident last March, 29-year-old Chinese national Gao Hua Yun and 40-year-old Marcy Dayawan @ Mimi from the Philippines were abducted from the Singamata Reef Resort off Semporna.

Both were freed after a ransom was allegedly paid to the kidnappers, although Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said no ransom had been paid. – July 15, 2014.

Missing constable called wife last night

KOTA KINABALU, July 14: Family members of marine policeman Constable Zakia Aleip finally heard from him, 48 hours after he was reported missing. The 26-year-old had contacted his wife, Sharifah Erna Berson, last night, telling her he was alive. “He called his wife last night and told her he was okay, except that he is with some people,” Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted by The Star. He said although they have an idea who were behind the shooting incident in the Mabul Water Bungalow Resort, off Semporna, they are still unsure of Zakia’s location, adding: “We are still waiting for further calls.” Zakia was abducted by a group of heavily armed men who ambushed the resort in the Mabul Island. Meanwhile, Corporal Ab Rajah was buried with full honours at the Kampung Kebun Bunga Muslim cemetery near his home village of Kampung Bubul, near Semporna today morning. His wife, Salamah Amad and parents Jamuan Ajuan and Kamsiah Indaman were joined by Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Malek Harun along with other state officials to pay their last respects. It was Ab Rajah’s last meal. His body was found under the jetty, close to the restaurant where he was having dinner. Initial investigation revealed that the suspects, who came from the Philippines, had quietly entered the location before ambushing the Malaysian security forces. A massive manhunt has been launched with the collaboration of all security agencies to track down the gunmen with operations covering the Mabul and islands off Semporna. The incident occurred just about one-and-a-half hours after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced that several additional measures would be implemented to further strengthen the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) in addition to the recent administrative restructuring, when attending the breaking of fast and dinner function with Sabah Barisan Nasional leaders and the people, here, last night. He said this included deploying Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad’s (MISC) container freighter, the MT Bunga Mas Lima, to Sabah, where it will serve as “mother ship” for maritime assets and personnel near the Philippine border. “The vessel will be a forward operational base for intercepting cross-border criminals trying to flee to a neighbouring country after committing crimes in the state.” He added that additionally, two Petronas platforms were currently being modified and would be set up by year-end as the last line of defence between the Lahad Datu and Semporna waters. He explained the platforms will be equipped with modern radar that would enable the security forces to detect movements, day or night, in the area, he explained. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin hari ini menyokong usaha polis mengambil tindakan terhadap seorang anggota tentera yang terlibat kegiatan militan.

Timbalan Perdana Menteri itu berkata, tindakan pantas polis mampu mencegah insiden berdarah pencerobohan Lahad Datu berulang dan oleh itu ia sangat dialu-alukan.

"Saya sokong usaha yang diambil pihak berkuasa terutamanya polis kerana peristiwa yang berlaku di Lahad Datu ini sesuatu yang menggemparkan dan tidak boleh diizinkan.

"Apa lagi kalau bentuk keganasan. Kita tidak akan bertolak ansur. Jika polis menyiasat dan ambil tindakan. Kita serah kepada mereka untuk menghakimkan kes sebegitu.
"Saya tak kira siapa walaupun pegawai kerajaan. Asalkan ada bukti kukuh mereka terlibat dalam kegiatan (militan) dan ada asas untuk dikemukakan ke mahkamah," katanya selepas merasmikan Karnival Amal di Bukit Damansara, hari ini.

Semalam, Timbalan Ketua Polis Negara, Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin berkata seorang anggota Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (TLDM) adalah antara tiga rakyat tempatan ditahan polis di Sandakan kerana disyaki terbabit dalam kegiatan militan.

Katanya, suspek berusia antara 29 dan 31 tahun, ditahan dalam operasi khas yang dijalankan Bahagian Pencegahan Keganasan, Cawangan Khas, Bukit Aman.

Beliau berkata, seorang daripada individu yang ditangkap merupakan anggota kanan sel militan yang disyaki menjalankan latihan ketenteraan di kem milik Kumpulan Abu Sayyaf di Selatan Filipina, sejak 22 April lalu. – 14 Jun, 2014.
