Inaction against Ibrahim Ali proves double standard by Putrajaya, say lawyers

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/inaction-against-ibrahim-ali-proves-double-standard-by-putrajaya-say-lawyer

Putrajaya's refusal to act against Perkasa's Datuk Ibrahim Ali over his call to burn Bibles reflects a blatant practice of double standards, lawyers say, as the government continues to come down hard on dissenting voices.

Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) executive director Eric Paulsen (pic) said he was concerned with the "incredible excuse" given by de facto Law Minister Nancy Shukri for not taking any action against Ibrahim and instead defended him.

"Nancy made up new defences not found in the Sedition Act or case laws to justify the authorities’ inaction – citing that Ibrahim Ali was 'defending Islam'," he said in a statement today.

"Surely Nancy cannot be so ignorant to not know the intention of the maker is irrelevant in sedition cases and it is an offence to act, speak or publish statements with a seditious tendency. The incredible excuse of 'defending Islam' does not exist in sedition law and is therefore unacceptable."
He said LFL has defended freedom of speech and believed that it can only be curtailed in exceptional cases such as in cases of incitement to violence and hate speech but it was shocked at Putrajaya's "blatant double standards" in Putrajaya's inaction against Ibrahim.

"We are shocked by the blatant double standards that are being applied for Umno or pro-Umno personalities like Ibrahim Ali while cracking down hard on dissidents and opposition politicians for anything that is remotely controversial or offensive as exemplified by the trigger-happy sedition charges against N.Surendran, law lecturer Azmi Sharom, Adam Adli, RSN Rayer and many others."

Yesterday, Nancy said in a parliamentary written reply that no action will be taken against Ibrahim over his call last year to burn copies of the Bible containing the word "Allah" as he was merely defending Islam.

She said that the police concluded that Ibrahim's words were only directed at specific individuals, and not a threat to larger society.

"The statement he made was not intended to cause religious chaos but only to defend the sanctity of Islam," she replied to a question by Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng on why Ibrahim had not been charged with sedition.

Lawyer M. Kula Segaran, who is also Ipoh Barat MP, also expressed shock at Nancy's reply, claiming that her answer only cemented the belief among Malaysians that Putrajaya was practising double standards when it came to using the Sedition Act.

"Malaysians are now not only angry with the double standards applied by the authorities in not taking action against some individuals but also with the ridiculous excuse used for practising such double standards," he said.

"How could police inaction against Ibrahim Ali be explained or justified with 'he was merely defending Islam'?"

He said that defending Ibrahim was "most dangerous", as it would allow other extremist groups who made provocative statements and actions to get away with their act by offering a similar excuse.

Kula, who is DAP vice-chairman, noted that Seri Delima assemblyman Rayer was charged with sedition for uttering "Umno celaka", despite only referring to several individuals.

"Why should he be charged for merely calling an organisation celaka and had only responded to a protest by some Umno leaders?

"Nancy’s answer has only further confirmed what Malaysians already know – the government practises double standards in using the Sedition Act," he added. – October 9, 2014.

You can’t justify Bible-burning call as defending Islam, says ex-Umno leader

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/you-cant-justify-bible-burning-call-as-defending-islam-says-ex-umno-leader

Putrajaya cannot justify Datuk Ibrahim Ali’s call to burn Bibles as a defence of Islam, as the religion does not teach its followers to insult other faiths, former deputy higher education minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said today.

Saifuddin, who is CEO of Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF), said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri’s argument that the threat was made to defend Islam may spread confusion.

“Hajah Nancy said that Datuk Ibrahim had no intention to create religious chaos but was only to defend the sanctity of Islam.

“The government should not come up with this kind of argument (defending Islam) because it may lead to a misconception of Islam,” said the former Umno supreme council member.
Yesterday, Nancy said police decided not to act on against Ibrahim, who is Perkasa president, over his call last year to burn copies of the Bible containing the word “Allah” because he was merely defending Islam.

Nancy, who is the minister in charge of law, said police concluded that his words were only directed at specific individuals, and were not a threat to the larger society.

Saifuddin said today that several verses in the Quran stressed that Muslims should deal with adherents of other faiths in a just and peaceful manner.

“In the context of the burn-the-Bible statement, it is clearly stated in the Quran that ‘And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge’ (an-Na’am:108),” he said.

“I can understand some Muslims are offended or hurt by statements made by certain groups.

“But again, in defending Islam, Muslims shall respond accordingly as expressed in the Quran, ‘Be persistently firm for Allah, witness in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just, that is nearer to righteousness’ (al-Maidah:8).”

He added that Islam upheld religious freedom, with the Quran stating: “There shall be no compulsion in the religion” (al-Baqarah:143).

Muslims should be focused on promoting inter-religious harmony instead of threatening others, said Saifuddin, quoting al-Hujurat, verse 13, which stated: “We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another” (al-Hujurat:13).

“The dialogue should be conducted in a good manner as proposed in the Quran, 'Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best' (an-Nahl:125),” he added.

“Based on the above verses of the Quran and the tradition of the Prophet, it is clear that the minister’s argument does not reflect the true teachings of Islam and cannot be used to justify such statement from Datuk Ibrahim.”

Ibrahim's call in January last year prompted outrage from politicians and Christians, with critics accusing Putrajaya of double standard in using the Sedition Act against critics while sparing Ibrahim.

Nancy, replying on behalf of the prime minister yesterday, said investigations by the police into Ibrahim's statement found that what he had said was aimed at the activities of some individuals, who allegedly distributed Christian literature outside a school in Penang.

"The words he uttered were directed at individuals who were distributing Bibles with the word 'Allah' and also Jawi writings to students at Sekolah Menengah Jelutong, Penang, including Malay students," she said, referring to the police's findings.

This morning, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim censured Putrajaya for defending Ibrahim, saying that Islam would not condone such behaviour.

"It is just, I should say, the Umno position or the minister's position. (Burning the Bible) has never been condoned or tolerated (in Islam).

"In fact, my understanding of Islam is we must respect all religious beliefs and of course, religious texts," he said at the Parliament lobby.

He said the move by Putrajaya was clearly politically motivated as Ibrahim was only investigated under the Penal Code and not under the Sedition Act. – October 9, 2014.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has censured Putrajaya for defending Malay rights group leader Datuk Seri Ibrahim Ali's threat to burn the Bible by stating that it was meant to defend Islam.

The opposition leader said Islam would not condone such behaviour.

"It is just, I should say, the Umno position or the minister's position. (Burning the Bible) has never been condoned or tolerated (in Islam).

"In fact, my understanding of Islam is we must respect all religious beliefs and of course, religious texts," he told journalists at the parliament lobby this morning.
He said the move by Putrajaya was clearly politically motivated as Ibrahim was only investigated under Penal Code and not under the Sedition Act.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri said police decided not to take action against Ibrahim, who is Perkasa president, over his call last year to burn copies of the Bible containing the word "Allah" because he was merely defending Islam.

Nancy, replying on behalf of the prime minister, said investigations by the police into Ibrahim's statement found that what he had said was aimed at the activities of some individuals who allegedly distributed Christian literature outside a school in Penang.

Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng had also asked why the Sedition Act was still being used despite the government's promise to repeal it in 2012, and wanted to know when it would be repealed, as well as whether it would be abolished.

In her reply, Nancy referred to a press statement from the Prime Minister's Office on September 12 this year that full consultations would be held before the government decided whether or not to repeal the colonial-era law.

On the number of court cases under the act, she said there had been one each in 2009 and 2011, eight in 2013 and 12 from January to September this year. There were no cases in 2010 and 2012, she added. – October 9, 2014.

Merdeka dari Inggeris ke penjajahan Islamofasis – Farouk A Peru - The Malaysian Insider

A link shared at J.I.M Facebook Page on August 30, 2014 at 01:26AM via IFTTT:

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/rencana/article/merdeka-dari-inggeris-ke-penjajahan-islamofasis-farouk-a-peru

32 tahun kemudian, teater politik dunia berubah tahun ini dengan kemunculan Isis (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) yang sekarang sudah bertukar menjadi IS pula (iaitu Islamic State).

Sebenarnya, kita mempunyi penjajah baru.

– 29 Ogos, 2014.

[Google Translation]

57 years ago, Malaya gained its independence from British colonial rule. At first, our country was oriented and aiming to be a developed and modern country.

Our identity at the time until the decade of the 1970s is more suitable to our geographical situation, namely in Asean and also appropriate in the circumstances as a society.

Unfortunately, at the end of the 1970s, the 'Islamic Revolution' (Islamic Revolution) came from Iran which is ironically a Shiite. The wind of Islamization has came and has changed the political climate in Malaysia.

Umno which at the time does not use Islamic rhetoric much, forced to change their political rhythm to suit the Malay-Muslims taste.

They have choosen a young Islamisation tycoon who are experts in interweaving Islamic Rhetoric with the modernization flow which have been attracting Muslim scholars until this days.

The tycoon has built a political forces which is so strong and faithful to him until the way they talks are becoming more and more like their tycoon. Therefor Malaysia has turned its direction to become a modern Muslim country.

But the problem with Islamism is that it will always fall on the 'path of least resistance' (the easiest way).

I call it a 'Islamofasisme', a System of Oppression which uses Terminology (Terms System) from the traditional Islamic knowledge.

Islam which was brought by the Islamic tycoon was easily hijacked by Islamofasis to strengthen their position.

Gradually, the Malay-Muslim identity became fascist, and more oppressive.

32 years later, the theater of world politics has changed this year with the emergence of Isis (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria), which now has turned into IS (Islamic State).

This transformations is part of their politics martial arts to become a worldwide representative of Muslims. If they hold to the phrase of 'Iraq and Syria', then they will be only considered as representative of those areas.

Now they are 'Islamic State' representing the Muslims worldwide.

Boko Haram of Nigeria also understand how powerful is this rhetoric that they too have proclaimed themselves as a Caliphate.

Malaysia, which so far has been a place where Islamic terrorists (such as Jemaah Islamiyya) find new recruits and train troops, had been cheated by Isis as well.

The prime minister himself enticed by his speech writer and lauded the rapid advance of Isis.

If the Prime Minister himself can be ingested, not to mention the people? So far about 50 people have joined the ISIS army. One confirmed dead of bomb explosion among 25 Iraq Army who are considered as an ISIS hero, Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki.

If that's not enough, now there's the heroine Malays who joined ISIS to meet the claims of An-nikah Jihad (Jihad through marriage or sexual). Some religious figures in Umno, Abim and Isma aggrieved.

They asked the National Fatwa Council to express an opinion on this issue. Supposedly, the first practice is allowed, but stopped. But nor mentioned the termination is not made by the Prophet himself, but after he died.

These figures may not know that Mut'ah (temporary) marriage is a Shiite sect practiced a practice similar to marriage Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah allowing divorce by Talaq pronouncement or via SMS only. Just a little difference in the gap.

Why do we need the National Fatwa Council to clarify this matter? Is the education in primary and secondary school (three hours per week) not enough until the children does not understand that the movement of Islamic Extremists and Jihadists are wrong?

Maybe we are too focused on ritual and history that we forget this basic fact - that Islam is to bring peace, not to attack and conquer while killing and beheading!

Simple deduction would not reach it requires a verdict. Is our minds death to anything that holds Islamic branding? IS cleverly calls the country as a 'Caliphate', a name which can "mensihirkan" (somekind of magic spell) Muslims.

In our perception, 'Caliphate' is given a mandate by God himself so of course the responsibility of every Muslim to help.

Perhaps Muslim pupils should be informed that the Caliphate is only carried out by Shura democracy for more than 30 years. The remaining 120 years, it is conducted in accordance with the system of absolute monarchy.

Caliphs of Islam is that the kings of the richest in the world after raking in the money of the people. Is this the ideal Islamic Islamic legendary?

Actually, we had great new colonists. Since the Islamic Revolution, the colonists are quietly taking over the country's political climate so that we become a country that is so different from the first generation Malaysian father.

The new Malay-Muslim identity is increasingly Islamofasis, more violent and more oppressive. We must change the direction of this before its too late.

No wonder we question the myths handed down to us and get back to a rational and democratic Islam. - August 29, 2014.

Stop classifying Bumi Christians as Muslims, Sabah church tells NRD

http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/stop-classifying-bumi-christians-as-muslims-sabah-church-tells-nrd
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — A Sabah church called on the National Registration Department (NRD) today to rectify the problem of Bumiputera Christians with “bin” or “binti” in their names being wrongly classified as Muslims in their MyKads.

Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) Sabah president Rev Datuk Jerry Dusing said the church lodged a complaint with NRD two years ago for 162 such cases in Sabah, but was told that no further action could be taken because the files were lost.

“The JPN must desist from this Islamisation drive through changing the religious status in the MyKad of these Christians,” Dusing said in a statement today, using the Malay acronym for the NRD.

“We also wish to call on the authorities to rein in aggressive Islamisation in Sabah by overzealous ‘dakwah’ (evangelistic) elements from the peninsula through conversion by dubious means such as intimidation, inducement and deception,” he added.

Dusing said the wrong classification of Christians as Muslims in their MyKads has prevented them from getting married legally, which in turn prevented the registration of the birth of their children, as well as the children’s registration in schools and applications for their own identity cards.

“They have also been told by JPN that the department would only rectify their religious status if they went to the Shariah Court to get a declaration that they are not Muslims. It is most ludicrous to subject Christians to the dictates of the Shariah Court,” he said.

Dusing stressed on Sabahans’ right to freedom of religion that Sabah Catholic Archbishop John Wong had raised at the mamangkis gathering organised by the Perpaduan Anak Negeri (PAN) Sabah in Papar last Saturday.

“As we prepare to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the formation of Malaysia on 16 September, we wish to remind the government that the cornerstone of Sabah’s 20-point conditions to the Malaysia Agreement is anchored on freedom of religion,” he said.

News reports surfaced last January of Borneo natives being coerced and duped into embracing Islam, leading Christian group PAN Sabah to accuse Muslim extremists from the peninsula of oppressing Bumiputera Christians in the East Malaysian state.

In the so-called Project IC, which was investigated by a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) probing Sabah’s massive illegal immigrant problem, Muslim foreigners were purportedly given citizenship in exchange for their votes in order to keep the ruling government in power.

Villagers won't move out from dam area

KUCHING: Residents of three Bidayuh villages affected by the Bengoh dam project said the government has no right to evict them because it is customary land and belonged to the natives.

The villagers from Kampung Rejoi Nyegol, Kampung Bojong Siting and Kampung Sait-Muk Ayun said the land could not be used for business.

Villagers’ representative Tawet Anak Sanyok said the affected villagers had the right to live on their own customary land.

“We are not under the influence of opposition political parties,” he said in a press statement today.

Tawet said the villagers had never accepted the Sarawak government’s compensation to move out.

“When the construction of the dam started in 2009, we built our villages outside the dam’s perimeters.

“Kampung Sait-Muk Ayun villagers agreed to move out in 2012 but were unable to do so because the Bengoh Resettlement Scheme was not completed,” he said.

Tawet said the clearing work for the dam would only be completed in 2015.

MCA: Police probe into sedition case of teen is ridiculous
http://www.therakyatpost.com/news/2014/08/14/mca-police-probe-sedition-case-teen-ridiculous/

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14, 2014:

MCA has criticised the Penang police over its unnecessary investigation into a case involving a Form Five student under the Sedition Act.

Calling it totally ridiculous, the party’s Religious Harmony Bureau chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker said the public expected the police to investigate the teachers involved in publicising the incident for inciting physical violence against the student as this could have led to murder, disfigurement and injuries.

“While the bureau notes that the Penang Education Department has taken measures to give a warning to the teachers who had implored that the teenager, who had accidentally clicked ‘like’ on the ‘I love Israel’ Facebook page, be burnt alive, we are taken aback that police have questioned the student under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Sedition Act.

“This investigation is totally ridiculous, more so coming from the police in Penang, which has a Jewish cemetery believed to be the oldest in Asia. It will further erode the image of the authorities among the public,” he said in a statement today.

Ti said that the sedition probe against the 17-year-old begs the question if any entity, be it tangible or intangible with the word “Israel” in it, will be deemed seditious.

“For example, will those, including children carollers, singing the chorus for the Christmas carol The First Noel, which ends with Born is the King of Israel, also be subject to questioning under the Sedition Act?

“Will radio and television channels broadcasting The First Noel in its programmes or movie channels also be probed for sedition?”

Ti said such action by the police against a top scholar only added to the victimisation of the student and the perception, whether real or imagined, by non-Muslims regarding selective persecution of religious minorities.

He also expressed concern over the earlier report by The Rakyat Post where schoolmates of the teenager were reported to be bullying and spitting at him in school while another student was beaten up over a mistaken identity.

“MCA’s fears that the teachers’ call to burn the boy will lead to victimisation appear to be coming true.”

He said the authorities should instead focus on never instigating violence and harassment.

He said while MCA wholeheartedly opposed the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime against Palestinian Muslims and Christians on the Gaza Strip, it urged the authorities and educators to practise common sense and not misuse the boycott call against McDonald’s and Starbucks and resort to vigilantism..

The Aug 10 incident led a teacher to screen capture and upload the image depicting the boy’s liking of an “I love Israel” page without the boy’s consent.

Two other teachers commented, calling for a boycott over the student, with one suggesting to burn the boy alive.

Penang teen who ‘liked’ ‘I love Israel’ Facebook page under sedition probe
http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/penang-teen-who-liked-i-love-israel-facebook-page-under-sedition-probe

NIBONG TEBAL, Aug 13 — A Form Five student who was threatened with immolation for allegedly liking an “I love Israel” Facebook page is now under investigation for sedition.

The 17-year-old who sought police aid two days ago  was called in for questioning today by the South Seberang Perai police.

“We are investigating him under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Sedition Act,” Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi told reporters at the South Seberang Perai district police headquarters Hari Raya open house here.

“In his statement, he claimed that he had accidentally clicked ‘like’ on the page,” he said, referring to the teen’s recorded statement.

Abdul Rahim added that the police had questioned yesterday a teacher from the same school as the student who had allegedly linked the teen to the “I love Israel” Facebook page.

The sedition law prescribes a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a jail sentence of three years for a convicted first-time offender, or both, and raises the jail term to five years for subsequent offences.

The fifth former filed a police report after a teacher from his school allegedly circulated a screen captured image of the controversial post, which prompted attacks from other Facebook users to cut off ties with the student and to “boycott”.

Another teacher purportedly from the same school, went a step further, leaving on the first teacher’s Facebook page that is accessible only to friends a message that read: “Kita bakor je hahaha [We just burn hahaha]”.

South Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Shafein Mamat said more teachers and students from the boy’s school will be called to give their statements.

“We are investigating both aspects, one of him liking the controversial page and another on the threats against him,” Shafein said.

The student has since deactivated his Facebook account.

An open letter to murderers of minorities

A link shared at J.I.M Facebook Page on August 11, 2014 at 03:43PM via IFTTT:

http://blogs.tribune.com.pk/story/23563/an-open-letter-to-murderers-of-minorities/

Dear ruthless, relentless and barbaric attackers of the minorities in my country,
I‘d like to start by asking you about what happened day before yesterday?
With what conscience did you think that it was acceptable to brutally gun down a Sikh teenager and open fire at two other Sikh businessmen in Peshawar? Were you just having a bad day at the Hashtnagri Bazaar, as sources confirm that there was no enmity between them and you? Was the heat too much to bear that Jagmohan Singh, the teenager you shot, had to take the brunt of your barbarism? You critically injured Parimjit and Manmit Singh in the process also, who were mere traders in Peshawar. So what did you exactly gain out of this horrific display of inhumanity?
I am outraged as a Pakistani citizen. You have made a mockery out of my national flag by attacking our minorities. Had it been your way, you’d paint the ‘white’ part of the flag, the part that represents them, to ‘red’. That’s the colour that’s on your hands and in your bloodied eyes as we speak. You are the ruthless and relentless murderers who have slain our minorities in the name of our glorified religion. Save the religious debate on this letter and this post because, you hooligans, your religion does not permit killing of innocent people, no matter what creed they belong too.
This isn’t the first time that you’ve been hostile with the Sikh community in Peshawar. In recent years, several Sikhs have been victims of your strikes. Did you know that thousands of Sikhs have inhabited Peshawar and various parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) for generations? Many Sikhs have homes and businesses in the old-walled city in Peshawar. Of course you knew, but you just don’t care. The chief minister has announced a sum of Rs500,000 as compensation for Singh’s family, as though it will repair the immeasurable loss and pain they’re going through.
Day before yesterday, one of the hundreds of headlines read out loud about the killings and tortures that you have put our minorities through. Your attacks against minorities have spiked in recent months to degrees that are callous and merciless.
In September 2013, you assaulted a historic church in the same city, which killed nearly 78 people, that too on a Sunday―the day of their mass prayer. I’d like to know how it felt when your mosque in Rawalpindi was attacked in 2009, which took away the lives of countless Muslims during Friday prayers.
Did these minorities carry that attack? No, but how did it feel?
Wait, am I asking those with no conscience? Yes.
In April 2014, you barged into a Hindu ashram and even stole a ‘trishul’ (trident) in Tharparkar, Sindh. You have been targeting the Hindus in Sindh by breaking their temples, murdering them and raping their women. Did you not send two of your policemen along with their sidekicks on July 22, 2014, and gang raped a 20-year-old married girl after inflicting her with grave torture? What sort of sick beasts are you?
Five days later, on July 28, 2014, you went absolutely haywire in Gujranwala. Your barbarism and brutalisation stooped to a new form of low―killing Ahmadis while burning down homes. For heaven’s sake, even pregnant women were battered in the gruesome attack. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) condemned the episode and labelled it as ‘shocking and disgusting’. But I wonder why our police failed in preventing the mob attack which resulted in the Gujranwala attack. This event is considered to be the worst form of violence that the Ahmadis in Pakistan have endured since the concurrent extremist raid in their place of worship nearly four years ago that cold-bloodedly killed of 94 Ahmadis.
As a nation, black-marking or red-painting the ‘white’ part of our prestigious flag is just not acceptable. You think you’re waging a war under the name of religion? Well news flash to you, innocents aren’t to be killed or even hurt in any way as stated by your religion. Since you are completely ruining my flag, I see the moon and star in the flag, (which is primarily for ‘progress’ and ‘knowledge’ or religion as the five pinnacles of the ‘star’ suggest the five pillars of Islam), as ‘innocent children’. Are they next on your hit list? Do you really want to play Gaza, because let me tell you, if you carry on with this, you will be plucked out one by one by our honourable forces just as those militants are being squashed now in North Waziristan.
Shame on you for not standing by Jinnah’s advocacy for minorities. He clearly specified in his maiden address that the minorities living in Pakistan would have equal rights, obligations as well as privileges. He stated,
“You are free; you are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed that has nothing to do with the business of the State.”
As I end this, I hope that you stop with this barbarism, or come out in the open and show us your real face, because you are beasts and beasts aren’t afraid of coming out in the open. But you, you are mere cowards. You are among those who are more afraid of what the literate Pakistani citizens will do to you rather than the wrath of God.
With apathy for your barbaric attacks,
Patriotic Pakistani Citizen

'Islamic State kills 500 Yazidis, buries some children, women alive' - The Rakyat Post

BAGHDAD, Aug 10, 2014:

Islamic State militants have killed at least 500 members of Iraq’s Yazidi minority in northern Iraq, burying some of their victims alive and kidnapping hundreds of women, a Baghdad government minister said today.
The insurgents’ advance through northern Iraq has forced tens of thousands to flee, threatened the capital of the Kurdish autonomous region and provoked the first United States air strikes in the area since Washington withdrew troops from Iraq in 2011.

Iraq’s Human Rights Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said he had evidence that the Sunni militants had thrown the Yazidi dead into mass graves, adding that some of those buried alive were women and children.
About 300 women had been forced into slavery, he said.

President Barack Obama said yesterday that US air strikes had destroyed arms that the Islamic State, which had captured swaths of northern Iraq since June, could have used against the Iraqi Kurds, but he warned that there was no quick fix for the crisis that threatened to tear Iraq apart.

US military aircraft have also dropped relief supplies to tens of thousands of Yazidis who have collected on the desert top of Mount Sinjar seeking shelter from the insurgents, who had ordered them to convert to Islam today or die.

Sudani said news of killings had come from people who had escaped from nearby Sinjar, the ancient home of the Yazidis and one of the towns captured by the Sunni militants who view the community as “devil worshipers”.

“We have striking evidence obtained from Yazidis fleeing Sinjar and some who escaped death, and also crime scene images that show indisputably that the gangs of the Islamic States have executed at least 500 Yazidis after seizing Sinjar,” Sudani said.

“Some of the victims, including women and children were buried alive in scattered mass graves in and around Sinjar.”
Speaking before US warplanes struck militant targets for the second straight day, Obama said it would take more than bombs to restore stability, and criticised Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s Shia-led government for failing to empower Iraq’s Sunnis.

France joined the calls for Iraq’s feuding leaders to form an inclusive government capable of countering the militants.

“Iraq is in need of a broad unity government, and all Iraqis should feel that they are represented in this government,” Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said.

“All Iraqis should feel they are represented to take part in this battle against terrorism,” he told a news conference with his Iraqi counterpart in Baghdad in comments translated into Arabic on state television.
Maliki’s critics say his sectarian agenda prompted heavily-armed Sunni tribes to join the insurgency. But Maliki, serving in a caretaker capacity since an inconclusive election in April, has defied calls by Sunnis, Kurds, fellow Shia, regional power broker Iran and Iraq’s top ulama to step aside for a less divisive leader.
Wake up call
The pressure from France came a day after Obama described the upheaval in the north as a “wake up call” to Iraqis who have slipped back into sectarian bloodshed not seen since a civil war peaked in 2006-2007.
Nearly every day police report kidnappings, bombings and execution-style killings in many cities, towns and villages.

The Islamic State, which sees Shia as infidels who deserve to be killed, has met little resistance. Thousands of US-trained Iraqi soldiers fled when its Arab and foreign fighters swept through northern Iraq from eastern Syria in June.

The collapse of the Iraqi army prompted Kurds and Shia militias to step in, with limited success.
The Sunni militants routed Kurds in their latest advance with tanks, artillery, mortars and vehicles seized from fleeing soldiers, calling into question their reputation as fearsome “those who confront death” warriors.
Iranian-trained Shia militias may stand a better chance than the Kurds but they are accused of kidnapping and killing Sunnis, playing into the hands of the Islamic State, which also controls a large chunk of western Iraq.

After hammering Kurdish forces last week, the militants are just 30 minutes’ drive from Arbil, the Iraqi Kurdish capital, which until now has been spared the sectarian bloodshed that has scarred other parts of Iraq for a decade.

The possibility of an attack on Arbil has prompted foreigners working for oil companies to leave the city and Kurds to stock up on AK-47 assault rifles at the arms bazaar.

In their latest sweep through the north, the Sunni insurgents routed Kurdish forces and seized a fifth oil field, several more villages and the biggest dam in Iraq — which could give them the ability to flood cities or cut off water and power supplies — hoisting their black flags up along the way.

After spending more than US$2 trillion (RM6.4 trillion) on its war in Iraq and losing thousands of soldiers, the US must now find ways to tackle a group that is even more hardline than al-Qaeda and has threatened to march on Baghdad.

Iraqi security and intelligence officials said Islamic State fighters based in the western cities of Fallujaand Ramadi have been using tunnels built by former dictator Saddam Hussein in the 1990s to evade United Nations weapons inspectors to sneak across to towns just south of the capital.

DBKL installs bench dividers to combat vagrancy

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Foo spends the night salvaging recyclable waste from piles of rubbish discarded by shop owners along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in the city. When he grows tired of walking the 2km stretch, he often lays down for a nap on the cool wooden benches held up by three-foot long concrete legs along major one-way road. But Foo told The Malay Mail Online today that he had to sleep on the floor of the sidewalk last night because the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has installed steel bench dividers painted in luminescent green, which restricts him from stretching out his legs. He walks away looking exasperated, muttering under his breath, “Mahu tidur kejap pun, dia tak suka (Even to rest for a bit, they don’t like it).” Foo is among thousands of homeless, who have made the city’s streets and back alleys their home for years. It is unclear when the dividers were fitted, but Dapur Jalanan, a soup kitchen that hands out meals on wheels, spotted the steel bars yesterday night. In the photo tweeted by the soup kitchen, the non-profit organisation remarked, “Mungkin ini hadiah hari raya dari PBT kepada warga miskin kota (maybe this is a Hari Raya gift from the local council to city’s poor folks).” Dapur Jalanan could not be reached for comment. “DBKL said they would meet the soup kitchens operating in the city in town hall meeting, but this just shows that the crackdown is very real… this is a trial exercise by DBKL,” said Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (Empower) president Janarthani Arumugam, when contacted today. The latest measure appears to be stem from Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor remarks on July 3 that soup kitchens would be barred from operating within a 2km zone in the city centre as their operations are encouraging homelessness and reflected poorly on the image of the nation’s capital. Tengku Adnan had complained the areas where soup kitchens operate were dirty, attracted vermin that spread diseases like Leptospirosis, and dengue. After coming under fire for the remarks, the ministry sought to contain the negative publicity by saying it is merely setting up a “one-stop centre” to combat vagrancy in Kuala Lumpur, which was followed by a visit from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to the homeless on July 10. Tengku Adnan then announced that the ban will be postponed until after Hari Raya, which is next Monday. A DBKL media officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that City Hall installed the dividers to deter the homeless from “turning the benches to beds”. “You think people will sit on the benches after they (the homeless) have slept on them? It is just to make sure it is not misused,” said the officer when contacted. But Janarthani said the measure was uncalled for when there are not enough shelters in the city to home vagrants. “I note terrible apathy in these officers,” she said adding that by installing the steel dividers “they are making sure Kuala Lumpur is only exclusive for people of certain class”. She pointed out that the Federal Territories Ministry, which is in charge of the city, had promised to schedule and host a town hall meeting with the non-governmental groups which run the soup kitchens in the city before implementing any preventive measures. “They are not sincere, because the community was very willing to work with DBKL,” she said. The ministry also could not be reached for comment.

City Hall metal brackets on benches cruel to vagrants, say KL soup kitchen

City soup kitchen Dapur Jalanan is opposing metal brackets on public benches in Kuala Lumpur, describing City Hall's move to get rid of vagrancy as a "cruel and inconsiderate attack on the homeless community".

City Hall has started installing the brackets on public benches in the capital city's main thoroughfare of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, from the Chow Kit area to Dataran Merdeka.

The soup kitchen urged City Hall to respect the Federal Territories (FT) Ministry’s on-going consultation with the homeless community, soup kitchens and non-governmental associations (NGOs).

“This shocking move by City Hall is a disregard towards the spirit of negotiation as it happened without our knowledge, while we were still waiting to have our second meeting with the FT ministry,” Dapur Jalanan coordinator Hadi Khalid said in a statement.
He added the soup kitchens and NGOs were also in the midst of arranging a Town Hall meeting for the ministry and homeless community.

“This negative and aggressive gesture has also sabotaged our efforts in coming up with policy decisions to fix the issue of homelessness. It is a direct prejudice against the community, which will make them doubtful of the government’s honesty in dealing with their problems,” he added.

“I believe that Tengku Adnan’s (FT Minister) idea of cleaning Kuala Lumpur (KL) from vagrants is flawed. The installation of metal brackets is an eyesore that actually does more damage to the city’s image and the reputation of ‘Malaysian Hospitality’.”

He added that City Hall's latest move portrayed Malaysians as an apathetic and uncaring society especially among tourists during Visit Malaysia Year 2014. – July 24, 2014.
